Job summary




Grampian Conservancy covers 185,000 hectares of woodland in the north east of Scotland, from Forres in the West to St Cyrus in the South East, and from the coast to the Cairngorms. The forests are diverse, including significant commercial woodlands and large areas of native pine woodland. They are in a mix of private, public and community ownership. The forests support a large and growing timber industries sector, together with tourism, recreation and biodiversity. The conservancy team has 16 technical and support staff, based over two offices, the main office in Huntly and the Durris local office.



The conservancy team of 18 are based in Huntly in a shared office with FLS, with an outlying office at Durris. The team are busy, dedicated and enthusiastic carrying out a wide range of interesting and often complex casework and projects covering the whole range of our regulatory, grant giving and partnership remits. Currently a key part of our work is woodland creation with the Conservancy playing a major role in delivering the Scottish Government's woodland creation targets.

Job description




At the Senior Ops Manager, you will be our lead in delivery of targets and standards for our grants and regulations work. You'll work with the National Office Delivery, Policy and Tree Health Teams in particular to advance effective and successful delivery of challenging but attainable woodland creation targets, felling permissions, and successful compliance with statutory plant health notices.



At the same time you'll work as part of the Conservancy leadership team to develop, support inspire, motivate and mentor the team providing insight and knowledge around land management. You'll help the Operations Managers and Office Manger to ensure that staff feel supported in times of challenge by others, creating an atmosphere where the team understand that there is a substantial support network to call on.



You'll also work with the Conservator to track and influence competing polices and agendas in Grampian and Scotland, which may impact upon our work and help to shape, promote and defend sustainable forestry management and woodland creation across a wide range of sector interests, pressures and priorities.

Person specification



Experience




Essential:

Demonstrable in-depth knowledge and experience of sustainable forest management. Significant experience of assessing complex technical forest management issues. Excellent report writing skills, able to communicate concisely and effectively in writing and verbally. Significant experience of engaging with and managing stakeholders in complex or sensitive casework. Experience of successfully managing, mentoring and supporting a team. Competent user of Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel and Outlook. Experience of leadership at operational and stakeholder level.


Desirable:

Detailed knowledge of Scottish Forestry Grants and Regulations. Detailed understanding of the woodland creation process in Scotland and familiarity with GIS.

Technical



Essential:

HND or Degree in Forestry or a related environmental subject, or demonstrable equivalent experience to HND/Degree level. Membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or willing to start working towards attaining membership within 6 months of taking up post.
