About the role




We have a great opportunity to join our well established and celebrated children's therapy team. We are a friendly and welcoming team who are forward thinking and open to innovation and change. Children's physiotherapy sits within the wider "Children's Therapy" which is an integrated team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. This team works closely together to benefit the needs of the children and families in Wakefield District. We strive for continued improvement and achieving the trust vision of achieving an excellent patient experience each and every time.


This position is permanent and full time within the Children's MSK Physiotherapy Team. We support our staff through a recently developed competency package, as well as effective and thorough supervision and appraisal process.


We are a children's service based within Pinderfields General Hospital and Pontefract General Infirmary. The successful candidate will take on a varied MSK, orthopaedic and rheumatology caseload of children between the ages of 0-17 years. Groups which run across site include lower limb group, hydrotherapy and pilates. The successful candidate will be involved in running the groups, depending upon their experience and job plan. Assessment and intervention are completed predominantly in an outpatient setting. All staff work closely within the children's multidisciplinary team, linking with all professionals around the child. The MSK team works closely with paediatric orthopaedics running virtual fracture clinics and serial casting clinics as part of our job plan.


The service offers respiratory and orthopaedic in-reach onto the children's ward at Pinderfields in Wakefield and the candidate will have a role in this acute part of the service as required.


The job is cross-site and the primary location may vary depending on the needs of the service. As a service we benefit from excellent links within the trust and local authority and education. The successful applicant will need to be aware of the statutory requirements of a children's physiotherapist with regards to reporting to education.


You will need to be HCPC registered, with excellent clinical reasoning, communication and organisation skills.

There may be consideration for band 5 to band 6 developmental opportunity for the right candidate.

Main duties



To provide specialist physiotherapeutic assessment and management of Paediatric patients with diverse paediatric MSK presentations and complex physical symptoms. To provide physiotherapy for children with wide ranging MSK presentations in the hospital setting. Provide effective holistic and age-appropriate physiotherapy treatment of children in a suitable environment and hold a patient caseload. Providing acute respiratory and orthopaedic ward cover at PGH where cover is required within normal working hours. The specialist clinician will collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to provide a diagnosis and develop and deliver an individual treatment programme for their patients. To provide leadership and support to junior therapy colleagues in the assessment and management of MSK Paediatric conditions. To provide peer support, supervision and second opinions to members of the wider Paediatric team. To provide clinical education of physiotherapy students on placement. Be proactive in self-development and demonstrating initiative in promoting innovative approach to service development. Maintain own professional development and demonstrate high standards of clinical performance and professional practice To undertake a management role where appropriate in the clinical setting, where overseeing, planning and implementing objectives for more junior staff is necessary.

Key requirements




Graduate Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent


Registered with the HCPC


Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio, including attendance at recent and relevant postgraduate courses.
