Main Purpose of the Job
We are currently seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced Engineer to join our Civil Structures Team on the Portsmouth City Council Highways PFI Contract with Colas Ltd.
The successful candidate will support the team in the delivery of highway projects. Design experience associated with highway inspection, design and supervision of works is essential. You will be based from Colas' Portsmouth office with support from our wider London team.
You will provide technical and site support to highway and structural inspections, design and supervision of works activities from initial feasibilities and surveys, through design and construction phases to supervision of works and as-built documentation. Good performance will be rewarded and there is opportunity for professional development and qualification.
The role will be largely office/site-based role with minimal opportunity for home working.
Main Duties and Responsibilities;
Undertake services within an engineering environment which may include (but not limited to); scheme investigation, site inspections, data collection and analysis, feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed design, preparation of tender documents and works/construction inspection and supervision.
Prepare technical designs in accordance with approved design procedures and standards.
Prepare technical documents and drawings for checking and approval
Exercise engineering judgement and provide innovative solutions to engineering problems.
Agree with Contractor and liaise with Design Team and Project Manager any changes to the specification, work scope and construction detail.
Undertake the supervision of works.
Prepare designs, design calculations, tender documentation, scheme evaluations, design statements and other reports as identified in the Project Quality Plan on assigned projects
Carry out other duties identified in the Project Quality Plan on assigned projects
Undertake work using relevant standards, Codes of Practice, Health & Safety Legislation and current design methods
Comply with company business management system (and Colas / Client) and the procedures IMS & BMS procedures

Degree level educated or similar in Civil Engineering
Full driving license.
Experience
Good understanding and application of current highway design codes and standards
Good experience of Engineering principals, and experience with design on both Highways and bridges projects
Good understanding of current health and safety legislation
Asset Management
Use of survey equipment (e.g. total stations, GPS, etc.)
Highway pavement, drainage and signs & road marking design
Experience of structures inspections
