Senior Privacy Counsel, Dpo

London, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Legal London Permanent Hybrid

Job description

UNiDAYS, the world's leading Student Affinity Network, is looking for a seasoned privacy leader to drive our global data protection strategy and serve as DPO for our student-verification platform operating in over 118 regions.

Privacy, trust and compliance are central to our mission. You will lead the embedding of a robust, pragmatic privacy framework across product, platform and partnerships, working with the General Counsel, executive team and board. This role is both strategic and hands-on: you'll advise on business initiatives while owning governance, regulatory engagement and risk-management globally.

Job requirements

Qualified lawyer (UK or equivalent); minimum ~6 years' post-qualification experience including a significant period in a privacy leadership role. Deep expertise in GDPR (UK & EU) and strong working knowledge of other global privacy regimes. Proven experience in a tech or data-driven business, preferably product-led, where privacy is business-critical. Track record of building or significantly maturing a global privacy programme (policy, governance, operations, training). Gravitas and confidence engaging with board members, executive leadership, regulators and senior stakeholders. Strong influencing and communication skills: can distil complex privacy issues into clear business-relevant guidance. Solid commercial contract negotiation skills including familiarity with processing/security clauses and international transfer mechanisms. Pragmatic, commercially minded mindset with a collaborative, hands-on style. Experience using OneTrust. Privacy certifications (CIPP/E, CIPM or equivalent) are a plus. Excellent written and verbal English. A low-ego, team-player who thrives in a fast-moving, high-autonomy environment.

Job responsibilities

Lead and mature the global privacy & data protection programme, ensuring compliance with the GDPR, CCPA/CPRA and other global regulations. Serve as the company's DPO (UK and applicable jurisdictions), liaising with supervisory authorities and managing data subject rights, investigations and regulatory queries. Embed "privacy by design & default" across product and engineering lifecycles: from feature conception through to launch. Draft, negotiate and maintain key privacy contracts: data-processing agreements, security addenda, international transfer mechanisms (SCCs, BCRs etc). Maintain core privacy documentation: Records of Processing Activities (RoPAs), Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), vendor assessments, data-mapping, policies, notices and training materials. Own incident response in collaboration with InfoSec & legal: breach assessment, escalation, reporting, remediation. Provide practical, risk-based advice to Product, Tech, Marketing and Commercial teams on data usage, new partnerships, international transfers and product roll-outs. Monitor global regulatory developments, interpret business impact and translate into clear, actionable guidance. Prepare concise, board-level reporting on privacy risks, incidents, metrics and strategic developments. Drive privacy awareness and a culture of accountability across the organisation: deliver training, act as internal ambassador, partner with cross-functional leads. Leverage OneTrust to deliver scalable, efficient compliance operations.

The opportunity to shape the global privacy strategy of a high-growth international tech business. Hybrid working with flexibility and autonomy. Competitive compensation and benefits package.
