We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior level Protection & Control Engineer to join our high-voltage renewables engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day technical management of a team of protection and control engineers overseeing the design, specification and configuration of protection and control systems for HV and EHV substations up to 400kV. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our clients electrical networks and interface with DNO and TSO systems. This is very much a hands on role, so the successful candidate will also be required to work on a small portfolio of their own project work.
As part of the wider electrical design team, the senior protection and control engineer is responsible for the interfacing all items of electrical equipment typically found within a HV or EHV substation to ensure that a suitable protection and control strategy is implemented. The senior engineer role is actively involved in setting the protection and control philosophy for the project.
The individual must possess an excellent working knowledge of relevant and applicable British and International Standards including ENA G99, Grid Code and application of TSO and DNO policies and procedures.
The individual must be able to Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, Customer requirements, TSO and DNO standards and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle.
Review tender or contract documentation and establish the protection scope of works and prepare design deliverables.
Skills & Qualities
A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).
Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry.
Previous experience of technical management of a specialist design team
Significant experience in the design of complete HV protection and control systems ranging from 11kV to 132kV and ideally up to 400kV, with 10 years plus discipline specific experience.
In depth understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications within the UK.
Ability to take the initiative and demonstrate a pro-active approach to activities and problems.
Ability to manage the various inter-departmental design interfaces (i.e. planning, electrical design, procurement, CAD technicians) working efficiently and effectively to deliver complex designs solutions.
Ability to both write and understand technical documents relating to all aspects of protection and control systems
Have working knowledge of the role of the designer under the CDM Regulations 2015.
Ability to contribute to a designers risk assessment for designs being developed and produced.
Ability to prioritise workloads in a proactive and organised fashion (using software tools as necessary) to ensure key deadlines are met and reliant parties are kept informed.
Detailed Role Requirements
Day to day management of a small team of protection & control and electrical designers.
Checking and / or approving design drawings and documents from the wider protection team and equipment manufacturers
Ensuring designers have all the necessary information to commence designs
Driving quality and consistency in the approach to design.
Thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations
Engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems
Accountable to provide design activities in accordance with applicable codes and standards, policies and procedures;
Mentor and provide guidance to developing engineers within the department;
Act as the P&C technical lead through the whole life of the project. This typically involves obtaining approval of the high level design and producing the detailed design as follow

Have an excellent working knowledge of all communications protocols used within DNO and private substation environments (Modbus, IEC 61850, DNP3, 4-20mA)
Possess a working understanding of G81 standards and TSO's and DNO's approved equipment registers.
Interface with the procurement team to provide suitable specifications where necessary and approve the manufacturers data sheets prior to purchase ensuring they meet the project requirements, employers requirements and appropriate British and European standards.
Input into the wider team for the specification of plant and equipment.
Ensure all required designs, models and drawings have an adequate level of review, checking and approval, including suppliers and subcontractors, according to Quality Assurance processes and in line with a 'right first time' philosophy.
Collaborate with designers from other disciplines under coordination of each projects
Embed safety and sustainability by design on all projects, ensuring compliance with the latest CDM Regulations.
Ensure document management procedures are always followed. This will include document numbering, naming and revision control.
Undertake training and mentoring to junior engineers and supervise their work. Contribute to identifying training needs for the team.
