Job description
This vacancy is for a Senior Registered Gas Engineer to join our Engineering team in the Major Hazards Group. This is an excellent opportunity to use your skills to lead HSE gas incidents, and contribute to innovative work to support valuable HSE and industry research projects to directly improve the lives of people.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to a diverse range of work within the health and safety sector, especially HSE incident investigation, but you can also expect to be involved in project work for HSE and industrial clients
You will primarily be part of a team of mechanical, electrical and gas engineers delivering incident investigation and experimental testing, but you will also collaborate with technical experts across many other disciplines
You will have specific responsibilities for leading or assisting with incident investigations, under the direction of the Principal Registered Gas Engineer, as part of HSE's gas engineering team. You will direct and, where appropriate, undertake related test and experimental work. This will include leading or directing other members of the team on incident investigations where and as appropriate
You will also be required, under the direction of the Principal Registered Gas Engineer, to provide technical advice and training to HSE inspectors and others, with support where appropriate. You will also be expected to support the provision of technical input to HSE's policy as required in relation to relevant topics
Your technical responsibilities will include:
Leading and supporting gas incident investigations, including fatalities, working with other agencies such as the Police and attending incident sites as appropriate. This will involve travel and overnight stays away from home
Writing or contributing to technical reports in relation to incident, HSE research or commercial projects. In some cases you will be required to technically review the reports of others
Producing witness statements and presenting evidence in court
Providing technical and regulatory advice and training to HSE inspectors and others.
Reviewing hydrogen-related proposals and research
You will be expected to frequently attend incident sites across Great Britain, often at short notice and occasionally outside 'normal' working hours (evenings, weekends). Some overnight stays will be required
Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours Per week

Essential Skills & Criteria
Able to apply your knowledge and experience of gas engineering in domestic, commercial, and industrial natural gas, LPG, oil, solid fuel and biomass installations to incident investigations
Able to apply your knowledge and experience of gas engineering in domestic, commercial and industrial natural gas, LPG, oil, solid fuel and biomass installations to the delivery of research testing in the field of industrial health and safety science and engineering
Able to write clear, high quality, accurate documents such as technical reports and expert witness statements that are suitable to be submitted as evidence if required
Able to clearly and concisely present information and opinion as an expert witness in court
Willing to apply and extend your capabilities into other technical areas of interest to the team - e.g. development and use of hydrogen in domestic/industrial energy settings
Job related expertise:
Demonstrate significant technical knowledge and practical competence in gas engineering relevant to domestic, commercial, and industrial natural gas and LPG installations.
Knowledge of and practical experience of undertaking gas-related incident investigations, and a willingness to obtain a relevant qualification in this area (e.g. IGEM GL8).
Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and application of standards and legislation relevant to downstream UK gas work.
Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the underlying science relevant to combustion, and an ability to communicate that information to others not familiar with the subject.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate technical information, especially through writing technical reports

Full driving licence that permits driving within the UK.###
Qualifications
Must hold at least a Level 4 academic qualification (e.g. HNC) in a relevant science or engineering subject (for example mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry).
Must be currently qualified to work on: domestic, commercial, industrial, and commercial catering natural gas and LPG installations; and oil, solid fuel and biomass installations and appliances and be able to demonstrate significant experience in each area.###
Memberships
Must hold membership of your relevant professional body, Gas Safe Register.
Must hold, or be eligible to apply for, membership of a relevant Professional Institution, e.g. IGEM.###
