The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the interdisciplinary Suicide and Self-harm (SASH) research group and to contribute to innovative high-impact research in global public health. The SASH team are a group of vibrant quantitative, qualitative and clinical researchers whose common aim is to better understand the causes of suicide and suicidal behaviour so as to inform clinical and population based prevention strategies. We are looking to appoint a senior research associate or research fellow to expand our global suicide and self-harm projects.



The postholder will be responsible for conducting quantitative data analysis of large secondary datasets and be based at the University of Bristol. There are opportunities to work on several other ongoing and upcoming research projects to help develop your skills and experience. The appointed researcher will be supported and supervised by Dr Duleeka Knipe who is a SASH co-director and leads several diverse research projects in low- and middle-income countries.



The post will be based at the University of Bristol, ideally starting in August 2025. Funding is available for two years in the first instance.


Hybrid working is available: we would expect the post holder to make themselves available for in-person meetings as required and to support the development of themselves and the wider team. We would expect a minimum of 1 to 2 days working in the office, with a preference for one of those days to be on a Tuesday.

What will you be doing?

The appointed researcher will be part of the Academic Centre for Mental Health and lead a programme of work focussed on analysing routine data and data collected by the Centre for Pesticide Suicide Prevention (CPSP).



Suicide by pesticide ingestion is the second most common means of suicide globally - 10-20% of all suicide deaths are by pesticide self-poisoning. The post holder will work closely with academics, the funder and policy makers (including the World Health Organisation), and generate new evidence to support the reduction of suicide globally (particularly by reducing pesticide related suicide deaths).

You should apply if you have a strong background in quantitative methods applied to health research, have a postgraduate research degree or equivalent professional experience in epidemiology, public health or relevant health or social science discipline, and experience of publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals. Given the need to communicate with multiple stakeholders, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates who have a desire to develop as a global mental health researcher and leader.
