The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is an internationally renowned and respected research and development organisation, bridging the gap between academia and manufacturing, and is home to some of the brightest minds in engineering from around the globe.

We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to join our growing Systems Engineering Team. The role is primarily focused on technical delivery of projects across the MTC. You will report to our Systems Engineering Manager and work across various technology departments, industrial sectors, and customers.

Leading Systems Engineering activities on a wide range of challenging projects, ensuring outputs meet customer expectations within agreed budgets and timescales. Developing and implementing Systems Engineering processes, templates and tools. Providing Systems Engineering technical expertise and governance, including nurturing earlier-career stage engineers in their technical development. Establishing and promoting best practice Systems Engineering across the MTC. Contributing to the development and realisation of Systems Engineering strategy. Proposing and supporting capability development projects that align with the Department, Technology Theme, and overall MTC strategy.

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience




The MTC is a collaborative environment where we value teamwork. To facilitate this, we are looking for candidates with the following skills, qualifications and experiences:

Experience of applying Systems Engineering approaches for all phases of the system development lifecycle, in a product development, design, industrialisation of technologies and/or manufacturing environment. Experience of defining and leading Systems Engineering activities on large-scale complex projects, for example, systems with bespoke control schemes, novel technologies, complex interfaces, multiple suppliers and/or partners, safety critical systems. Experience developing and implementing processes aligned with BS ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2023 or industry equivalent. A track record of excellent verbal and written technical communication at all levels. Experience with managing multiple stakeholders, partner and/or suppliers. Demonstrable experience of coaching and mentoring to support colleagues. Creative problem-solving abilities, with a practical approach to implementation. Applies a pragmatic approach to achieving project objectives and can adapt to the needs of the situation. Holding a degree, or equivalent experience or qualification, in an appropriate STEM discipline.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience



Experience as a functional team leader, including team administration, career development and pastoral care. Experience of applying Model Based Systems Engineering. Experience of manufacturing plant, assembly or production lines and manufacturing processes. Experience in functional safety, fault trees and safety assessments. Experience of design, development and realisation of system prototypes and system test rigs Engineering competence in wide range of engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Electronics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Simulation Modelling, to facilitate appropriate technical leadership of these functions at system level. Experience of developing FMEAs, HazID and HazOps analyses. Experience of applying agile methodologies, and/or spiral development within the Systems Engineering framework. Knowledge and experience of Quality Assurance, Process Assurance, Configuration Management and Lifecycle Management.

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry - often referred to as 'the valley of death'.


It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.


In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the 'workshop'.


Over the following seven years the MTC's rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.


Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.


We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.


During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
