About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Research Fellow to lead and shape the research function of Torfaen County Borough Council's new Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC).

Funded initially for five years by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the HDRC is a pioneering initiative that will enhance the Council's capacity to conduct and use research. The Collaboration will generate high-quality evidence on how local government can improve community health and reduce inequalities.

This is an exciting new role where you will:

Lead and mentor a small team of researchers. Design, oversee, and deliver research projects on the wider determinants of health. Embed a culture of evidence-based decision making across the Council. Secure research income through successful grant applications to ensure long-term sustainability. Build strong partnerships with the University of South Wales, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), third sector partners, and the local community.

About You

We are looking for an experienced researcher with:

A proven track record in developing and leading research projects. Strong experience in writing and managing research funding applications. Excellent skills in partnership working, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement. Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate research staff. A commitment to tackling health inequalities and driving positive change in communities.

Why Join Us?

This is a unique opportunity to help establish a new research collaboration within local government and to make a real difference to the lives of citizens in Torfaen.

We offer:

Flexible and hybrid working arrangements. Family-friendly policies. A generous local government pension scheme. Competitive annual leave entitlement.

If you are passionate about using research to drive change, have the skills and experience to lead at a senior level, and want to contribute to improving health and wellbeing across Torfaen, we encourage you to apply.

Welsh Language Skills are desirable for this post but not essential.

For an informal discussion regarding this vacancy please contact Gareth Cooke, Head of HDRC on 07933 885154 or email gareth.cooke@torfaen.gov.uk.

Torfaen County Borough Council strive to be a fair, supportive and effective employer. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. The Council expects all employees, paid or unpaid, to share this commitment.

You are welcome to submit your application in English or in Welsh. Each application will be treated equally.
