The UCL Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is UCL's new institute for infrastructure and innovation in digital research - the supercomputers, datasets, software and people that make computational science and digital scholarship possible.
We are an innovative hybrid: a professional services department that delivers reliable and secure infrastructure and services to UCL research groups, and a laboratory for research and innovation in the application of advanced computational and data intensive research methods, working in partnership with academics from all fields.
We are a home for the research technology professionals - research software engineers, HPC systems engineers, dev-ops specialists, data engineers, data scientists and data stewards - who support and collaborate in the delivery of UCL research, providing outstanding career development opportunities for these new kinds of research professionals
About the role
------------------
One of the challenges of providing IT infrastructure for researchers is the necessity of flexibility - the traditional model of IT services results in services lagging (sometimes years) behind researcher needs and due to the more general requirements of large groups of users fails to take into account the individual infrastructure and applications requirements of research projects or groups.
This post designs, develops and automates such Research Computing (and related services) in collaboration with UCL researchers. A Senior Research Infrastructure Developer will be responsible for supporting, building and maintaining the computational software and infrastructure that drives UCL's research. They will support both persistent services with large numbers of users, and also bespoke solutions for specific research groups.
About you
-------------
A Senior Research Infrastructure Developer will be interested in building platforms in cloud environments with the intention to become an expert. Therefore, you will have experience building, deploying and supporting such infrastructure or applications in a research environment and/or industrial equivalent settings. You will be a strong advocate for "building it right" - software defined, in version control etc. As part of this role there is an opportunity for growth - to obtain advancement by the Research Infrastructure Developer steering the focus to include training, line management, research or further specialisation in HPC/Cloud technologies.
Experience of infrastructure as code (IaC), virtualization and container orchestration are essential. Configuration management at scale and GPU technology in virtualised environment are highly desirable.
As part of this recruitment we are looking to appoint a Senior Research Infrastructure Developer with specialisations in two or more of the following technologies: Infrastructure as Code (IaC), cloud, Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, GitOps, GPU, data engineering, MLOps.
