This role is a 12 month fixed term position to serve as a conduit between the Collaborations team and the commissioning teams across the NIHR Coordinating Centre.
The Collaborations team supports a range of collaborations across the NIHR's funded infrastructure in areas of unmet and strategic need, and delivers ad hoc commissioning activities to support a range of initiatives. This role will support Collaborations, including the NIHR Translational Research Collaborations and the Multiple Long Term Conditions Cross-NIHR Collaboration, as well as managing and leading on commissioning of specific portfolios and initiatives, in mental health and other disease areas. We are looking for a Senior Research Manager with knowledge of ways of working across multiple NIHRCC teams to join our team to directly lead and support a range of new and existing initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Fostering and Supporting Collaborations Across NIHR:

  • Coordination and operationalisation of cross-NIHR strategic initiatives, such as MLTC and mental health. Work to support delivery of strategic activities across the NIHRCC, and gathering information from multiple teams.
  • Supporting all aspects of research funding and fostering collaborations to galvanise collaborative proposals and relationship-building amongst senior research professionals.
  • Provide intelligence reports and analyses to support meetings with prospective partner organisations and lead new initiatives, events and other activities on behalf of NIHR.
  • Other tasks to support the NIHR Collaborations team.
Portfolio and Awards Management:
  • Managing a portfolio of funded projects, including development of materials for monitoring impact and supporting knowledge dissemination, and providing analyses/updates for DHSC stakeholders.
  • Ad hoc commissioning activities (e.g. single tender, 1-off commissioning calls) and "special project" work.
  • Negotiating funding agreements for projects recommended for funding, including the negotiation of milestones and deliverables, financial arrangements and reporting requirements to enable successful project progression.
  • Developing and maintaining excellent professional relationships with other NIHR teams (e.g. Infrastructure, Programmes, Finance, Comms), applicants and award holders and with colleagues within the Department of Health and Social Care, acting as a role model to colleagues at all levels
General/other duties:
  • Line management of a Portfolio Analyst to oversee the provision of analyses, intelligence and information on NIHR research portfolios to facilitate collaborations, meetings, briefing requests, and other requests for information.
  • Liaising regularly with internal and external stakeholders, including leading, organising and attending meetings
  • Identifying enhancements to working practices
Qualifications
Required Criteria
  • Knowledge of the National Institute for Health and Care Research architecture and objectives, preferably with direct experience of either commissioning, portfolio management or collaboration activities
  • Background in biomedical, health, engineering or social sciences
  • Experience or clear awareness of commercially focused research or the commercialisation of research, including understanding of intellectual property
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills, able to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, working to challenging targets and deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills from liaising with internal and external stakeholders and communities
  • Good financial awareness
  • Excellent people and stakeholder management skills, with ability to delegate and influence behaviour
  • Well developed analytical and complex problem solving skills, with a solution based approach
  • Excellent communication skills and customer focus, including experience of external liaison
  • Excellent relationship-building and management skills to achieve successful collaborative working and shared objectives
  • Excellent IT skills, e.g. Microsoft Office or Google Suite

Additional Information
Compensation, Benefits & Working Arrangements:
Salary: 48,600 to 51,300 per year
Location: Twickenham, London / Hybrid working model
Contract Type: 12 month Fixed Term Contract, Full Time
Working Hours: 37.5 per week, 7.5 hours per day
Annual Leave: 25 days, plus UK public holidays
