Position Purpose

As a Scientist in the Drug Product Development Organization - you will be part of a highly integrated Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) group. The overarching goal of the group is to gather, process and model fundamental knowledge to inform crystallization, secondary processing (e.g. spray drying), other processing techniques and formulation decisions through development and into manufacturing and commercialization. This laboratory-focused, hands-on, Scientist position will be responsible for data generation and interpretation in an internationally matrixed, cross-functional environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide fit-for-purpose powder properties testing methods and data which provide key insights and process knowledge to projects within the development and commercial portfolio.
  • Collaborate within project teams to provide innovative analytical approaches to help solve challenging problems encountered to support route selection and process optimization studies conducted by chemists and chemical engineers and connect powder properties to drug product performance.
  • Advise colleagues in other parts of the organization on methods to generate the appropriate particle size measurements to, proactively or reactively, address differences in processing.
  • Partner with other functions within MSE to evolve, integrate and optimize analytical methods and methodologies for materials scientists and chemical engineers to create an industry leading data set to help support modelling and decision making.
  • Curate data effectively and work with others to model the data generated so that it can support timely and effective decision making. Write summary reports and present to matrix and other teams to contextualize the data generated.
  • Expected to grow and advance to become either a leader in Matrix Teams and/or grow to be a subject matter expert in powder properties measurement.
Specific Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Seeks opportunities to publish/present work externally.
  • Accountable for identifying opportunities and/or implementing solutions to improve monitoring of the effects on particles of manufacturing processes and drug product performance. Curating the data to allow modelling via existing or novel tools.
  • Effectively interface and collaborate across drug substance, drug product, and analytical development teams in technical and matrix teams. Work with drug formulation and analytical teams and understand their drivers. Expected to consistently display a can-do attitude and demonstrate the willingness and capability to adapt and grow within a complex and changing environment.

  • Extensive experience in particle properties and problem solving in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in particle size analysis, including automated image analysis, along with allied techniques such as SEM, surface area analysis and laser light scattering.
  • Understanding of the role of particle characterization in decision making and problem solving in pharmaceutical development and in commercial products.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency and ability to work against short timelines, for instance in commercial product investigations.
  • Knowledge of how complex modelling tools can influence understanding of powder properties and awareness of how to curate data to maximize the opportunity in this area.
