Background



SWGfL is a not-for-profit charity ensuring everyone can benefit from technology free from harm. Forming 1/3 of the UK Safer Internet Centre, our experts advise schools, public bodies and industry on appropriate actions to take in regard to safeguarding and advancing positive online safety policies. Providing vital support to schools, organisations, teachers, parents, victims of online / offline harm, key government departments and industry, SWGfL has been at the forefront of the online safety landscape for nearly 25 years; delivering key support to those in need across the UK and Internationally.

Our work has brought online safety to the forefront of public attention, ensuring everyone can develop their understanding of what online safety truly means in an ever-changing world.

Job Role



As the senior software engineer, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining the charity's digital platforms, from our main website to web-based tools and applications that support our beneficiaries, funders, and staff. You'll work closely with communications, data, and project teams to ensure our online presence is reliable, engaging, and inclusive.

You will balance hands-on coding with strategic thinking, identifying opportunities to improve user journeys, accessibility, and the overall digital experience.

Responsibilities



Design, build, and maintain user-friendly web applications and websites aligned with the charity's goals

Develop and maintain APIs and integrations with third-party systems (e.g., CRMs, donation platforms)

Ensure accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), security, and performance standards are met across all digital products

Work collaboratively with non-technical colleagues to translate needs into practical digital solutions

Implement and manage hosting, deployment, and version control processes (e.g., GitHub, Plesk, Linux)

Troubleshoot, test, and maintain existing systems to improve performance and reliability

Contribute to digital transformation and innovation projects within the organisation

Plan and architect new systems to power common digital solutions that meet current and future needs across the organisation

General Duties



Maintaining in-house developed software in PHP/MariaDB

Attending project meetings

Planning and responding to requests

Developing new components and websites

Creating documentation and resources

Additional Support



This role has been created in response to a growing needs analysis within the web team. Working as the senior software engineer, you will be expected to support the already well integrated team to meet the overall web department deadlines, in line with the organisation's overall strategy.
