About Us

The SIA is the organisation responsible for the regulation of private security. It is an independent, arm's length body (ALB) of the Home Office, reporting to the Home Secretary, under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The SIA's purpose Is protecting the public through effective regulation of the private security industry and working with partners to raise standards across the sector. Its regulatory remit covers the whole of the United Kingdom.

The SIA has two main duties: the compulsory licensing of individuals undertaking designated activities within the private security industry and the management of a voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme, which measures private security suppliers against independently assessed criteria.

SIA licensing covers security operatives who are in guarding, door supervision, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, and public space surveillance using CCTV, vehicle immobilisation (in Northern Ireland) and key holding. Licensing ensures that private security operatives are fit and proper persons who are properly trained and qualified to do their job.

About the Role

You will work in our strategy and design team within Business Standards. The department is responsible for delivering strategies designed to improve the standards of businesses across the private security industry.

We recently examined, reviewed, and refreshed our strategy for business approval and considered whether we should propose changes to the ACS to better ensure public protection. The growing recognition of the critical role private security plays in public safety means there is a clear need for a new scheme which is grounded strategically in public protection.

We are mobilising a programme to deliver our refreshed strategy, including technical resources. You will contribute to our success by providing your skills to inform and shape our thinking as we design, develop, and deliver a new business approval scheme.

This is an exciting, high-profile, and dynamic role where you will be at the forefront of change in the private security industry. You will be leading on developing the standards (products) that business must comply with to demonstrate they meet core public protection standards, and those that business could achieve to demonstrate higher achievement (good practice).

In doing so you will be setting and defining standards for businesses, in-turn enhancing public protection capabilities in the sector and providing added reassurance to those who by and rely on private security.

You will report directly to the senior strategy and scheme design manager, who is the lead subject matter expert overseeing the delivery of strategic design for all business approval scheme work streams.

Strong technical experience of designing and delivering (from concept to publication) business frameworks, policy, process, and guidance that conform recognised certification products, baseline standards and good practice. Experience of working collaboratively with various internal and external stakeholders to identify issues and challenges that exist (or may exist in the future), offering unique and innovative solutions to problems. An understanding of methods used to achieve and raise standards within a complex service industry, particularly for the end user and a technical understanding of regulatory processes. Able to work in a dynamic change environment and achieve milestones and meet targets. Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills with the ability to explain complex information and the ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders.
