A chance to thrive

We're looking for a skilled

Senior Systems Engineer

to join our Containers Platform team at Tesco Bank, part of Barclays Bank UK Plc.

You'll play a pivotal role in designing and optimizing our container platform, leveraging Amazon EKS to deliver scalable, secure, and resilient solutions.

This role will be key in enabling cloud-native transformation, influencing how we deploy and manage workloads across our Kubernetes cluster.

You'll get to play a large part in helping to shape and modernise our application workloads and bring these on to the platform.

You'll work closely with senior leadership and engineering teams, shaping future ways of working and contributing to strategic platform decisions.

It's a great time to join as we scale our emerging containers platform--your contributions will directly impact its evolution.

Unlike many roles, you'll have ownership of container solutions, from design to deployment, in a fast-moving, cloud-native environment. You'll influence platform standards and best practices, not just follow them.

You'll work alongside other Containers Team Systems Engineers, DevOps Specialists, Application and Security Engineering teams and be close to our Design and Architect functions.

Reporting to the Engineering Lead, you'll collaborate with Product Owners, the Product Manager and Agile delivery teams.

You will have the opportunity to gain certifications such as CKA/CKAD, working your way towards becoming a fully certified Kubestronaut! 6 Days per year of dedicated training is offered for all colleagues.

Career progression opportunities into Engineering Leadership roles or Platform Architecture.

We work in a modern Agile environment, contributing to iterative delivery and continuous improvement.

You'll get hands-on with Amazon EKS, Docker, Terraform, Helm, DataDog, GitLab and have future opportunities to get involved with service mesh technologies.

What you'll be doing

Manage and optimize EKS clusters, ensuring high availability, security, and performance. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate container solutions into broader cloud architecture. Contribute to the platform roadmap, introducing innovative solutions for scalability and cost optimization. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers. Oversee the configuration, maintenance, and optimization of EKS clusters, including node groups, networking, and storage. Analyse and optimize container workloads for cost efficiency, resource utilization, and high availability.

We need you to have

Proven experience with Amazon EKS and Kubernetes architecture. Proficiency in using CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins/Cloudbees, GitHub/GitLab). Expertise in AWS services supporting EKS (IAM, VPC, NLB/Ingress, Secrets Manager). Solid understanding of networking and security in containerized environments.

And if you have any of these, even better

Familiarity with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio) and observability stacks. Experience with Karpenter or EKS Auto Knowledge of Serverless integrations with Kubernetes. Experience with the following service components (Kubewarden, Cillium, Traefik, Karpenter, Qualys, CoreDNS, kube-proxy)

We don't expect you to tick every box, and if you feel you hit most of the brief, it's worth exploring to further develop your career here with us.

What's in it for you

Prepare for your retirement with our colleague pension scheme. Private Medical Insurance including GP Service scheme. Discretionary annual incentive (AVP level and above) Indulge in a holiday allowance of 28 days plus 8 prescribed bank holidays. Benefit from our family-oriented initiatives, encompassing enhanced maternity leave pay, a shared parental leave policy, and a generous paid paternity leave. Take advantage of our ongoing learning opportunities and training, to help you achieve the job and career you want.

Everyone's welcome

We want all our colleagues to always feel welcome and be themselves at Tesco Bank, part of Barclays Bank UK Plc. We're committed to building a more inclusive workplace and celebrating everything that makes colleagues unique, and value the richness and diversity this brings to our business. A more diverse business helps us deliver on our purpose to serve our customers, communities, and planet a little better every day.
