Brief Description

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network.

As a Senior Technical Officer your role is to provide day to day technical support for a wide variety of equipment across a large geographical area.

A Senior Technical Officer works both in the office and outdoors on site, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our team members come from a variety of different backgrounds, and this might be the first time that you've even considered a career in rail. We're focused on your transferrable skills and behaviours and if you can demonstrate that you are well suited, then we will provide you with all the necessary training to have you working safely and competently out on the network.

About the role (External)

The role is interesting and varied, working across a large geographical area on the Traction Overhead Line Equipment. The area covered includes the East Coast Main Line between Thirsk, North Yorkshire to Grantham, South Lincolnshire, the Sheffield Tram Train and a section of the Transpennine route. The base depot you will work from is at Doncaster and travel to site will be within your normal working hours from the depot.

A Senior Technical Officer works in a small highly skilled and motivated team of individuals with Mechanical Engineering expertise. The 25kV Overhead Line Equipment is operationally critical to the Railway and running of trains.

The Overhead Line team are responsible for ensuring the overhead line equipment is in the right position above the tracks for trains to collect current via their pantographs at all times.

The Senior Technical Officer responsibilities include:

Detailed on site measurement and surveying together with the desktop analysis of the surveys. Modern working methods utilising train borne data sources, helicopter imaging surveys, drone data collection and LIDAR systems. Making technical engineering decisions and recommendations from the multiple data sources available. Supporting the overhead line maintenance production team to get it right first time and ensure compliance to required instructions and standards. Investigation of equipment and system failures to understand root cause and prevent repeat failures Supporting recovery activities for overhead line failures Supporting front line maintenance staff in technical aspects of the delivery of work

The successful candidate will have a good aptitude for problem solving, keen attention to detail and natural inquisitiveness. This is essential for carrying out technical enquiries and investigations into root causes of failures of equipment and processes. The role offers loads of opportunity for making a real difference to safety and performance, continuous improvement, and sense of achievement and job satisfaction.

The role has been described by others currently employed in Senior Technical Officer positions as 'a bit of everything'. Also, that it offers a good level of autonomy, variation, job satisfaction (making a difference) and a good base from which to progress to becoming a highly experienced, well balanced Engineer.

Our Senior Technical Officers can work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You could be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit, across tricky terrain.

As the Railway is a 24/7 operation, there will be a requirement for on call response commitment.

You matter to your team
