Job description




You will join the CMA's Data, Technology and Insights unit and work with a team from a range of backgrounds, from public policy professionals, lawyers and economists to web developers, data scientists and experts in machine learning.


The team is united by our keen interest in technology, its implications for markets and consumers and how regulators should act to amplify benefits and mitigate risks.


As a Senior Technology Adviser, you will shape the regulation of digital markets and data-driven companies. The remit of the team is varied and there will be opportunity to be involved across the portfolio of work.


You will have the opportunity to apply your expertise to CMA cases and projects- current examples of our work include developing remedies in our cases on Google search and Apple's and Google's mobile ecosystems, implementing recommendations from our investigation into the market for cloud services, and analysing the impact of generative AI on established business models in the Getty/Shutterstock merger inquiry.


Responsibilities will include building capability to understand the impacts of AI and algorithmic systems, horizon scanning emerging technologies and trends and identifying emerging competition and consumer issues in data and technology markets


You will deliver significant contributions to cases with a data or technology focus across critical business areas for the CMA and will need to deliver verbal and written communications on these issues to non-technical colleagues, including writing reports for internal and external publication.

Person specification




It is essential that you can provide evidence and examples for each of the following selection criteria in your application. For tips on how to make the most your application, please have a look at our guidance document.

Significant knowledge of one or more areas of technologies. This could be a degree or equivalent in a STEM discipline, an academic background or experience working on a technology (Lead Criteria) Proven ability to build strong relationships, internally and externally (Lead Criteria) Experience working in multidisciplinary teams. CMA case and project teams often include lawyers, economists, delivery and project management professionals and data scientists (Lead Criteria) Ability to quickly learn new technical subjects and synthesise complex information. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience writing articles or non-technical publications on technical topics and briefing senior stakeholders on complex issues. Experience developing innovative communications outputs and external events. Active interest in data and technology markets, demonstrated through continuous professional development and a desire to learn more.

Selection process details




This vacancy is using Success Profiles , and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

Application and sift stage



As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form. The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review), presentation and an interview. Arrangements for the presentation and interview will be enclosed in the invitation. Please note that it is essential that your personal statement is aligned to provide evidence that you have the knowledge and experience for each of the essential criteria (as included on the role profile attached and listed above under 'Person Specification') in your application. Your personal statement should be no more than 1250 words. An initial sift based on the first three criteria points (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, all elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification will then be considered. We may raise the score required at sift stage to progress to interview if we receive a high number of applications and take through the highest performing candidates to the interview stage. Successful candidates at sift will be invited to an interview which will be conducted either in person or via Teams.

Interview stage



At the CMA we apply a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you and we use the Success Profiles framework assessing the Behaviours, experience and technical skills listed in the advert and attached role profile. The first part of the interview will comprise of written assessment and presentation, details of which you will sent with your interview invitation. The second part of the interview will be a 45 minute -one hour panel interview where you will be asked questions based on the Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills outlined in the role profile. A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles.

Timeline (the dates outlined below are indicative and may be subject to change)
