The post is offered to internal candidates only on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.

The Networks Team at University Information Services (UIS) has an exciting opportunity for a secondment as a Senior Wireless Projects Engineer.

Networks are responsible for designing, building, operating, and supporting the University\'s backbone data network, internet connections, wireless network, data centre network and many departmental networks.

The Wireless Team within Networks are responsible for designing, managing, and operating the wireless infrastructure; access points, controllers and supporting equipment which provides services to end users and institutions. This post is an engaging and rewarding opportunity to work within a team that delivers critical connectivity to tens of thousands of devices daily across the Collegiate University.

The role holder will work under the Operations Manager (Wireless) to deliver specialist support and advice in the rapidly evolving area of wireless technology. They will be expected to manage important wireless projects to implement, improve and maintain the various wireless access point installations across the University.

This position is based at the University\'s West Cambridge Site. Core hours are typically between 9 to 5, Monday to Friday.

The candidate should:

Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Have an IT networking background.

Demonstrate experience and a passion for managing technical activities and technology delivery.

Have strong planning and problem-solving skills.

Be able to work closely and build relationships with other University members at all levels.

Assist others to make effective use of our services.

Keep up to date with new technologies and help colleagues to develop their skills.

Focus on delivery and a continuous improvement approach to existing services.

You will be responsible for:

Project managing wireless site surveys, installations and other projects.

Managing relationships with suppliers, contractors, and customers (internally and externally).

Produce, or approve contractors, wireless access point network design architectures.

Provide logistical support and determine equipment supply requirements.

Deliver specialist advice in wireless technologies using radio frequency engineering knowledge and skills.

Working with the Operations Manager (Wireless), and the team to determine priorities.

Ensure the team\'s systems, activities and processes are documented.

Assisting developing business cases for new installations, products, or services.

Previous experience that would be desirable:

Wireless site survey and design.

Operation, management, and design of enterprise wireless networks.

Enterprise wireless platforms such as ArubaOS or Cisco Catalyst Wireless and associated hardware and software.

A good understanding of Wi-Fi protocols, standards, and radio frequency engineering.

An understanding of network fundamentals such as DNS and DHCP.

The following skills would also be beneficial:

A history of supporting a cutting-edge technology to deliver services.

Ability to share knowledge and skills to support colleagues and users.
