Scope of the Role:
As a SHEQ Advisor (Utilities), you will provide expert guidance and support across live utility projects, ensuring health, safety, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) compliance at every level. Working closely with operational teams on-site, you will uphold high SHEQ standards aligned with NERS accreditation and industry legislation, while supporting safety planning, documentation, training, and performance monitoring.
How You'll Succeed:
Advising on SHEQ planning and promotion, contributing to safe and compliant working environments.
Monitoring SHEQ performance on power contracts and promoting continual improvement.
Supporting the preparation of project SHEQ documentation, including CPPs, QMPs, Risk Registers, RAMS, and Emergency Plans.
Assisting with the completion of PQQs and tender submissions from a SHEQ perspective.
Ensuring all staff and subcontractors comply with SHEQ policies, procedures, and training requirements.
Identifying training gaps and supporting the development of SHEQ competence and awareness.
Investigating and reporting incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences in line with RIDDOR.
Monitoring contractor SHEQ performance and ensuring alignment with RCE and client standards.
Ensuring compliance with NERS across all operations.
Participating in audits, inspections, and toolbox talks to reinforce a positive safety culture.
Engaging with operational teams in live substation environments to maintain strict safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
Health, Safety, Environment & Quality Management
Lead by example on all H&S, environmental, and quality matters across utility projects.
Conduct regular audits, site inspections, and risk assessments to identify and resolve hazards.
Maintain and develop SHEQ systems, contributing to a culture of continual improvement.
Support legal compliance with CDM regulations, NRSWA, HSG47, and client-specific safety standards.
Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring thorough reporting, root cause analysis, and effective implementation of preventive measures.
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure effective use and review of SHEQ documentation (RAMS, COSHH assessments, CPPs).
Maintain accurate and up-to-date HSE records, including training logs, incident reports, inspection checklists, and audit documentation.
Keep track of industry and legislative changes to ensure continuous legal compliance.
Assist with reporting obligations to regulatory bodies and clients.
Training & Staff Development
Deliver inductions, toolbox talks, and ongoing safety briefings.
Highlight skills gaps and support the organisation of training aligned with operational risks.
Encourage behavioural safety initiatives and support staff in developing SHEQ competence.
Operational & Strategic Support
Participate in safety planning and method statement reviews for high-risk activities.
Liaise with clients, auditors, and external stakeholders to uphold SHEQ expectations.
Work closely with Project Managers, Site Supervisors, and SHEQ personnel to embed a proactive safety culture.
What It Takes:
3-4 years' experience in a SHEQ role within the
utilities industry

Proven background in

ive substation environments and NERS-compliant projects.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
Strong analytical, reporting, and problem-solving skills.
Professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive H&S data.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook.
Qualifications:
Essential:
NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum)
EUSR or CSCS card (role-relevant)
NRSWA (SWQR)
Knowledge of HSG47
Competency in incident investigation and reporting
Full UK Driving Licence
Desirable:
NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma or working towards
IOSH Membership (e.g., TechIOSH or GradIOSH)
First Aid at Work certification
Experience with CDM regulations
National Grid or DNO Competencies (preferred but not essential)
