Shift Manager Late Shift

Job Description

To take full ownership of day-to-day manufacturing operations on the late shift, ensuring the highest levels of performance, customer satisfaction, and compliance with HSE, quality. This role is accountable for meeting site targets and driving a culture of continuous improvement, development, managing employee life cycle and operational excellence. The role will work closely with all departments, taking shared responsibility for achieving the factory's strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

1. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

Ensure a 100% safe working environment by enforcing compliance with company H&S policies and procedures.

Thoroughly investigate all HSE incidents and accidents using root cause analysis putting actions in place to ensure preventative measures are effective

Lead by example in promoting a proactive safety culture, ensuring all team members adhere to PPE, safety and environmental protocols

Generate and encourage team members to submit HSE incident reports, actively investigating and implementing corrective actions

Ensure the work environment is free from hazards by conducting regular walking audits, reporting and escalating risks immediately and resolving any issues within the remits of the Business.

2. Quality

Ensure 100% compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), always keeping the area clutter free.

Partner with the Technical team to meet all customer and food safety regulations, ensuring full BRC (British Retail Consortium) compliance

Investigate and implement corrective actions regarding customer complaints.

Take ownership of all quality documentation, ensuring accuracy, precision, and traceability

Ensure all processes operate within specification, with immediate escalation and corrective action of any deviations

Ensure teams are following HACCP and manage any non-conformances across all areas ensuring incidents are investigated to determine route cause and actions to close out are effectively implemented.

3. Operations

Maximize production efficiency by ensuring the team perform to the standardised way of running

Ensure all lines, people and processes are adhering to the standards and agreed way of working ensuring variation and variability is kept to a minimum

Deliver manufacturing standards and performance KPIs efficiently and consistently

Site management responsibility out of hours with the authority to prioritise and delegate as defined within the escalation procedures

Collaborate with other departments to support the delivery of the production plan against the budgeted targets and volumes ensuring achievement of HSE and quality standards.

4. Control

Take full accountability for material usage, waste reduction and labour productivity ensuring cost-effective production

Ensure labour control within budget, actively managing shift staffing levels, break allocation, and overtime

Proactively manage holiday planning and cover up to several weeks in advance and ensure the lines have the correct labour cover for future weeks production

5. Hit the plan

Ensure 100% adherence to production schedules, meeting customer demand without compromise to HSE or quality

Communicate effectively with the teams for smooth handovers and all team members have line of sight of key issues

Take full responsibility for production readiness, ensuring all equipment and resources are prepared for shift handovers

6. People

Set clear, measurable KPIs for all direct reports, ensuring accountability

Lead by example, demonstrating high standards of professionalism, discipline, and work ethic

Develop and mentor team members, identifying training needs and fostering a culture of growth

Regularly conduct floor walks with team leaders to monitor performance.

Handle disciplinary, grievance, and performance management processes, ensuring fair and effective resolution

Experience, Skills & Knowledge

Proven FMCG experience within Food Manufacturing ideally in a Shift Manager or Production Manager role. A strong character with excellent communication skills who can engage with their team to drive performance levels. Self-motivated and resilient with the ability to problem solve and make effective judgements, with a proactive rather than reactive approach and able to work cross functionally.
