Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Groundworks Site Manager
to oversee the delivery of civil engineering and groundworks projects from start to completion. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing day-to-day site operations, ensuring works are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
This role requires a strong leader with hands-on experience in
earthworks, drainage, foundations, concrete structures, and road construction (Section 278 works)
, capable of managing teams, subcontractors, and client relationships effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and manage all site activities to ensure project milestones are met.
Supervise site teams, including direct labour and subcontractors, ensuring efficient and safe working practices.
Implement and enforce company health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
Liaise daily with the Contracts Manager, engineers, and client representatives to report progress and resolve issues.
Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and programmes of work.
Manage materials, plant, and logistics to maintain productivity and control costs.
Conduct daily site briefings, toolbox talks, and safety inspections.
Ensure works are carried out in line with approved method statements and risk assessments.
Maintain accurate records including site diaries, labour returns, and progress reports.
Support the preparation of valuations, variations, and as-built documentation.
Requirements
Essential:
Proven experience as a Site Manager in groundworks and civil engineering.
Strong knowledge of drainage, foundations, concrete works, and road construction.
Excellent understanding of HSE legislation and CDM regulations.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
SMSTS certification (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
CSCS card (Black or Gold).
First Aid at Work certificate.
Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
NVQ Level 6 (Construction Site Management) or equivalent qualification.
Temporary Works Coordinator or Supervisor qualification.
Experience with reinforced concrete (RC) structures and Section 278 highway works.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software.
