CONTRACT TYPE: Attachment/Fixed-term Contract until November 2026
DEPARTMENT: Midlands Investigations Team
LOCATION: East and West Midlands - Hybrid
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: 41,200 - 54,500 depending on relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
We're happy to discuss flexible working. If you'd like to, please indicate your preference in the application - though there's no obligation to do so now. Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
We produce high impact, multi-platform investigations for BBC Local audiences across the Midlands.
Our journalism prioritises local audiences on digital, radio and tv platforms, finding stories which resonate and matter to people living in our region. We serve our local and regional audiences first.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
We cover a huge, diverse, and exciting news patch. Our job is to tell stories people from all corners of the Midlands can trust and relate to. We take a people-focussed approach to our investigations, which have reached millions across the UK and regularly feature on national BBC News programmes and platforms. Our content has a reputation for high production values, creative multi-media storytelling, sound editorial judgement, and the ability to explain complex issues affecting everyday life in our region and the UK. In addition to our multi-platform news content, our team collaborates and produces long-form tv and audio content for BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, growing production expertise in this area.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Accomplished shooting skills - you will use a range of camera equipment on location to gather for our investigations. You will work alongside editorial colleagues to serve our audience by delivering multi-platform content to the highest technical and editorial standards.
  • News Editing - you will edit alongside colleagues and on solo projects, using your own footage and rushes shot by other crews to bring together the full story for broadcast on TV and for online use. A creative eye is essential.
  • The successful candidate will need to work flexibly across the East and West Midlands regions.
  • If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we would love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
We're looking for someone who can take responsibility for shooting, directing and editing our investigations. You'll have a strong track record for making and shaping tv news packages and longform TV documentaries. We want to hear your ideas about creative self-shooting and how you would direct others less experienced in visual storytelling. You will have great examples of how you have brought stories to life, working with colleagues to craft impactful content that stands out on BBC platforms and beyond.
You will have an excellent technical understanding of operational equipment and shooting techniques gained from hands on experience in news and current affairs and be able to communicate these with colleagues. You will be self-disciplined, able to demonstrate your ability to plan ahead, and deal with the changing demands of news scenarios confidently.
You will demonstrate a commitment to original journalism and have bags of creative ideas and treatments to help our investigations resonate with diverse audiences. You will have experience delivering high profile investigations and working with senior editors to navigate legal and editorial risks. You will need a thorough understanding of the BBC's Editorial Guidelines and a commitment to the editorial aims of BBC News.
We need a team player, able to work with other journalists to develop their ideas for all platforms. You will be willing to support colleagues in developing their own shooting and editing skills.
If you have most of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
Please contact or for more information.
