Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon

England, United Kingdom

Job Description

Our client is a well-established, multi-branch, independent small animal practice offering high-quality, first-opinion veterinary care. With a long-standing history and a large, friendly team, they are currently looking for an experienced veterinary surgeon to join them in a full-time role, although flexible working options are open for discussion.
This role offers the opportunity to work in a busy and varied practice, where the successful candidate will be supported by a multidisciplinary team of veterinary surgeons, nurses, and support staff. The new team member will contribute to a high-volume caseload and have the chance to expand in-house services, particularly in surgery or orthopaedics, depending on their interests. They will also be involved in providing 24-hour care and will benefit from access to excellent clinical facilities and collaborative work with visiting specialists.
Responsibilities

  • Deliver first-opinion veterinary care across a varied caseload of small animal patients
  • Perform consultations, diagnostics, surgical procedures, and follow-ups
  • Take part in the out-of-hours rota (approximately 1.5 weekends in 8 and 1 night on-call every other week)
  • Provide high-quality inpatient care, supported by a dedicated overnight nursing team
  • Collaborate with colleagues and attend regular clinical and wellbeing meetings
  • Contribute to student training and mentoring, if desired
  • Participate in social and fundraising events as part of a close-knit and active team
Requirements
  • MRCVS-qualified, with experience in first-opinion small animal practice
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Confident in managing both surgical and medical cases; an orthopaedic interest is desirable but not essential
  • Committed to providing high standards of care to clients and their pets
  • Flexible and open to being part of an on-call rota
  • Passionate about personal development and continued learning
Benefits
  • Salary between 40,000 and 60,000 depending on experience
  • 6.6 weeks' holiday including bank holidays (pro rata), with a holiday buy-back scheme
  • One paid volunteering day per year (pro rata)
  • Generous CPD allowance (1,700 and 5 days per year, pro rata), with support for certificates
  • RCVS, VDS, and two other professional memberships paid
  • Out-of-hours bonus per call seen, plus private accommodation available when on-call
  • Time off in lieu after weekend and on-call shifts (e.g. Monday and Tuesday off after a weekend, or Friday off after working a Saturday)
  • Flexible rota with a mix of 3, 4, and 5-day weeks across an 8-week cycle
  • Corporate gym membership and Cycle to Work scheme
  • Private medical insurance available via payroll deduction
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption, and shared parental leave
  • Staff pets treated at cost and may accompany the team to work
  • Dedicated overnight nursing support for inpatient care
  • Facilities include digital x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, surgical theatres, a dental suite with dental x-ray, in-house laboratory, consulting rooms, and separate canine and feline wards
  • A supportive work culture with trained mentors, mental health first aiders, and wellbeing champions
  • Regular team events, social activities, and charity fundraising
