The Small Tools Mechanic will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, testing, and servicing of a wide range of small tools and equipment used across operational rail, vegetation management, civil works, and construction activities. Based at the Ashford depot, the role supports regional delivery teams by ensuring all equipment is safe, compliant, and available for use.

Key Responsibilities
Inspect, service, and repair small plant and tools such as:
Chainsaws, strimmers, hedge cutters, and brush cutters
Cut-off saws, generators, pumps, and compressors
Power tools (e.g., drills, breakers, grinders)
Pedestrian mowers
Specialist rail or vegetation tools as required
Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults, carry out repairs, replace components, and complete required adjustments.
Undertake routine planned maintenance in line with manufacturer guidance and company procedures.
Carry out LOLER, PUWER, and statutory inspections, ensuring full compliance.
Maintain accurate service records including repair logs, parts usage, inspection sheets, and equipment tracking.
Ensure all tools are cleaned, tested, and certified before issue.
Manage spare parts, consumables, and stock levels; raise requisitions when needed.
Provide technical guidance to field teams on correct tool operation and maintenance.
Keep the workshop safe, organised, and compliant with safety and environmental standards.
Assist with fleet and plant maintenance when required.
Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Small Tools Mechanic, Tool Fitter, Plant Fitter, or similar.
Strong understanding of 2-stroke and 4-stroke engine maintenance.
Good electrical fault-finding capability.
Experience servicing Stihl, Husqvarna, Makita, Honda, or similar brands is desirable.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Full UK driving licence.
Qualifications (Desired)
NVQ Level 2/3 in Plant Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
Manufacturer-specific training (e.g., Stihl, Husqvarna).
PUWER/LOLER inspection competence.
CSCS card beneficial.
Any rail-specific competence advantageous.
