Job Description

About Studio 29 & Factory 31

Studio 29 & Factory 31 is a UK-based product design and manufacturing company, headquartered in the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye.

We were founded on a simple principle to bridge the gap between design innovation and manufacturing reality. We don't just design new products; we bring them to life efficiently, reliably, and at scale.

Over time, we've built a multi-disciplined team of designers, engineers, and production specialists working across diverse industries. Together, we create disruptive, high-quality products that enhance brands and deliver real value to our clients.

With in-house facilities for electronics design, mechanical design, and assembly, we can rapidly prototype, test, and transition designs into production -- all in line with ISO 9001 quality standards.

As we continue to grow, we're looking for a motivated and organised Office Administrator to support our expanding team and operations.

Role Overview

Studio 29 / Factory 31 is expanding its electronics manufacturing capability and is seeking an experienced SMT Technician to support our fast-growing production environment. You will play a key role in running our SMT lines, ensuring high-quality builds, smooth workflow, and reliable output across customer projects. This role suits someone who is hands-on, detail-driven, and confident working with modern pick-and-place machinery and assembly processes.

Key Responsibilities:

SMT Machine Operation & Programming

Set up, operate, and maintain SMT pick-and-place machines (Essemtec, KAYO SMT, etc.). Load and edit programs, optimise placements, feeders, and troubleshoot production issues. Control and monitor screen-printing operations, ensuring correct paste application and stencil alignment. Conduct first-off checks and implement corrections to achieve high yield and quality. Support reflow profiling, stencil cleaning, and routine machine maintenance.

Kitting & Production Preparation

Interpret BOMs, job packs, and drawings to prepare accurate kits for production. Experience in procurement or handling of SMT kits and component verification. Manage feeder loading and organisation to minimise changeover time and errors. Maintain accurate stock control, and highlight any discrepancies or component shortages.

Hand Soldering, Rework & Inspection

Perform high-quality hand-soldering on SMD and through-hole components. Conduct self-inspection of work to ensure quality standards are met. Inspect boards post-placement, identifying irregularities, polarity issues, solder defects, and missing components. Follow ISO 9001-aligned internal quality standards and collaborate with the QC team.

Manufacturing Support

Assist with through-hole assembly, gluing, and final assembly when required. Provide feedback to the design team on any manufacturability issues or inconsistencies found during build. Work within ESD-safe areas and follow correct handling procedures. Be flexible to support shift working patterns during peak periods to meet customer deadlines.

Essential Skills

Experience operating or being heavily involved in an SMT production line environment. Comfortable operating SMT pick-and-place machines and associated line equipment. Understanding and control of screen-printing operations for solder paste application. Experience in BOM interpretation and kit preparation/procurement. Strong quality inspection skills with ability to identify manufacturing irregularities. Ability to self-inspect work to maintain high-quality output. Solid understanding of electronics manufacturing processes. Ability to read and work accurately from technical drawings. Ability to read component datasheets and recognise system components.

Desired Skills

Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality procedures and documentation. Experience with 2D/3D PCB software, including PCB CAM tools. Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to think "outside the box." Experience providing engineering feedback to design teams regarding DFM issues.

Personal Attributes - The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate

Ability to accurately follow instructions and established procedures. Strong communication skills, able to engage with staff and customers at all levels. Excellent timekeeping, with the ability to work to deadlines and prioritise tasks effectively. Professional, confidential, and reliable conduct. Able to work independently and as part of a team, and comfortable asking questions when unsure. A proactive appreciation of Health & Safety requirements and a responsible working approach.
