We are looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow to work on novel communication techniques for fibre communication systems.

Be a part of the University of Southampton, an institution in the top one per cent of world universities and one of the UK\xe2\x80\x99s Russell group research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise activities. You will work in the world leading Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides. The Telecommunications Systems Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for experimentation in photonic systems and provides direct access to the UK\xe2\x80\x99s National Dark Fibre Facility, a unique geographically distributed transmission facility dedicated to research, linking together four top British universities.

You will be part of the DSIT-funded collaborative project \xe2\x80\x9cRealising Enabling Architectures and Solutions for Open Networks (REASON)\xe2\x80\x9d, which aims to revolutionize communication systems for open 6G networks. The project will build systems based on state-of-the-art optical technologies, such as novel amplifiers, integrated photonic components, hollow-core and multi-core optical fibres. As a member of this project, you will be engaged in developing power transfer techniques for highly distributed antenna arrays and optical access points (i.e. implement power over fibre) through specialty optical fibres. This will require an in-depth understanding of optical technology and the ability to develop novel solutions for powering these critical network components.

In addition to experimenting on power transfer systems, you will take part in specifying the characteristics of these components prior to fabrication and will contribute to their characterisation. You will be responsible for designing and executing the experiments that will best describe their behaviour and you will demonstrate their potential in communication networks, often in collaboration with the project partners and other researchers in the group and the ORC.

To be successful, you must have a strong background in photonics and communications with extensive practical experience of working with optical fibres and systems. Ideally, you will also have experience in characterising optical fibres, photonic components, optical system modelling and/or the design and experimentation of high-speed optical communication systems.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team. You must hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics. Previous postdoctoral experience is favoured but not necessary.

  • Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
