Volant Autonomy is a deep tech startup developing autonomy solutions to transform the future of aviation. Based in the centre of Bath, we are building a suite of technologies to enable safe autonomous flight. Our work includes partnerships with organisations including several aerospace primes, air navigation service providers, and the defence industry.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our integration team. You'll help us bring our technology into real-world operations and contribute to the development of our three core products:
Via - our flight planning and management tool
Traject - our detect and avoid solution
Flyte - our next-generation autonomy solution to improve access and operational density
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of industry experience with practical experience building integration between complex systems, and be enthusiastic about contributing across the full product lifecycle--from early-stage planning to development, deployment, and operational support.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting a wide range of integration and collaboration projects including supporting live flight trials
Collaborating with the product teams to deploy our technology in novel operational environments
Engaging and collaborating with customers and stakeholders
Research, development and rapid prototyping of novel features and integrations
Contribute to roadmap planning, technical design, and product evolution
Write robust, well-tested code and participate in code reviews
Skills and Experience
Essential
Proficiency in Python (or similar), with demonstrated experience developing robust, maintainable software
Experience working with embedded software
Ability to work in high pressure environments such as live flight trials
Keen to work across a wide range of technologies, and motivated to learn in unfamiliar areas
Experience with automated testing: unit, integration, and end-to-end
Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including modular design, version control, and code review workflows
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders
Desirable
3 years of professional software development experience
Experience building or consuming APIs using technologies such as gRPC and HTTP REST
Experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms
Familiarity with DevOps practices and knowledge of GitHub Actions or comparable CI tools
Exposure to trunk-based development methodologies
Previous experience, knowledge or interest of working in the Aerospace industry
