The Sporting News is searching for a Software Engineer with Full Stack experience to help develop our digital platforms. The Sporting News is a sports media publication that originated in the United States in 1886 and has editions across the world. As an Engineer at The Sporting News, you will have the opportunity to work across a variety of technologies, and will benefit from working in a supportive environment with experienced developers who prioritize teamwork and collaboration.
Our team is empowered to iteratively and rapidly deliver changes all the way through to production. You'll see the impact of your contributions live in production almost immediately upon joining. Though our company has a long and storied history, we are run with a startup mentality. We are looking for an engineer who has a keen sense of ownership, can drive projects forward, and collaborate with the full engineering and product team.
Our existing technical stack includes the following:
Python with Django, Django CMS, Django Ninja, Redis, Celery
AWS with ECS, ECR, RDS (PostgreSQL), SQS, SNS, Lambda, S3
Terraform
GitHub + Actions
Cloudflare
We've recently rolled out a new frontend platform for our website, handling the publishing data pipeline and serving content to multiple global editions. We're currently in early stages on a new custom CMS that will be purpose-built for delivering high quality sports content to our rapidly growing user base. We'll soon be introducing site personalization to ensure our users are served content that's most relevant to them.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven individual with strong knowledge of Python and Django. We'd love it if you have experience with Django templates, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We'd certainly consider candidates with a strong background in an equivalent tech stack who have a desire to rapidly level up in a new language. An understanding of CDNs and caching, along with experience working on high traffic web applications is a plus.
We highly value communication and the ability to work with an international team, along with the ability to drive projects forward independently. A sense of ownership and responsibility is crucial.
In addition, we prefer that our Engineers can help build the infrastructure that their applications run, with the mantra; you build it, you run it. We don't throw work "over the wall" for other teams to deal with. We believe teams that develop the work, with their domain knowledge, are best placed to also run and maintain their work.
