About The Engine Room
The Engine Room isn't just a restaurant - it's a place to gather, share, and savour every bite. With its mix of industrial-inspired style, a shareable menu, and a laid-back but polished approach to service, we're creating a spot where people want to come back again and again. Our menu is built for sharing, with small plates grilled meats and fish, and stone-baked pizzas. Drawing inspiration from Derby's engineering and rail history, The Engine Room's design features exposed beams, brass accents, and mechanical details that evoke the spirit of innovation. Its bar will feature carefully curated selection of craft cocktails, fine wines, and local beers.
The Role
As Sous Chef, you'll work closely with the Head Chef to lead the kitchen team, helping deliver consistently high-quality food while keeping things running smoothly day to day. This is a hands-on role in a new kitchen with a new team so we need someone who can hit the ground running so you'll need two or more years' experience in a similar position.
What you'll be doing
Supporting the Head Chef with prep, service and team management
Leading shifts and helping mentor the kitchen team
Ensuring quality, consistency and presentation are spot on every time
Overseeing food safety, cleanliness and compliance
Helping with menu development and seasonal specials
Managing stock, deliveries and kitchen organisation
What we're looking for
Previous experience as a Sous Chef or strong Junior Sous ready to step up
Passionate about great food
Calm, organised and focused under pressure
Good understanding of food hygiene, kitchen systems and team development
