Job Description

Job Purpose



We are seeking dedicated and reliable Cleaning Operatives to join our Waste Management and Transport team in Southwark. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and security of designated streets and estates across the borough. This role plays a key part in maintaining a clean and pleasant environment for residents and visitors.

Key Responsibilities



You will carry out a range of cleaning and waste management duties across public areas, estates, and streets. Duties include, but are not limited to:

General Cleaning Duties



Clean corridors, balconies, lobbies, stairwells, landings, lifts, refuse stores, store rooms, and external communal areas. Sweep, damp mop, and wet mop hard floors and walkways. Scrub internal and external floors as required. Perform high-level cleaning including wall washing and cleaning of fixtures, fittings, and internal windows.

Waste and Refuse Management



Collect and remove bulk or bagged refuse from estate areas. Empty external litter bins and rotate paladin refuse containers. Litter picking and leaf clearing in designated outdoor areas. Clear snow and address weather-related debris when needed. Clean major spillages, soilage, and other deposits as required.

Equipment and Supplies



Safely operate and maintain cleaning equipment and materials after appropriate training. Report any faulty equipment or supply shortages to the Supervisor. Ensure all cleaning equipment and materials are stored securely.

Training and Procedures



Attend and actively participate in training sessions for new methods, procedures, and equipment. Follow security procedures to maintain the safety of council property. Comply with all health and safety standards and legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Requirements



Essential:



Good understanding of cleaning tasks and associated tools and materials. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Physical capability to carry out manual work and operate cleaning equipment. Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Commitment to maintaining cleanliness, safety, and security in public areas. Willingness to attend training and adopt new working methods.

Desirable:



Previous experience in a cleaning or caretaking role. Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures. Experience working in a local authority or public sector environment.

Additional Information



This role requires working in multiple locations across the borough of Southwark. Uniform and cleaning equipment will be provided. Applicants must be willing to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, depending on operational needs.
