Special Projects Engineer

Job Description

The Special Projects Engineer is accountable for the engineering and technical management of all assigned projects. This includes coordinating and overseeing multiple contracts simultaneously, ranging from small works to major capital projects.

Working closely with the Project Managers and Directors, the postholder will plan, forecast, resource, and manage technical activities to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance from conception to completion.

Key Responsibilities:



Project Management & Delivery



Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor assigned engineering projects. Manage multiple projects ensuring installation and delivery within agreed budgets and timescales. Develop, monitor, and update detailed project programmes. Record and report all delays or disruptions to management promptly. Lead project teams to ensure efficient delivery and quality outcomes.

Technical & Quality Control



Oversee and verify compliance with design specifications, codes, HSEQ policies, and performance standards. Provide technical and management support to site-based teams, including preparation of technical submissions for plant and equipment. Review and approve engineering deliverables, initiating corrective actions where necessary. Ensure all project documentation and design information are accurately maintained.

Commercial Management



Assist with the pricing of variations and preparation of monthly valuations alongside the Project Manager. Monitor project budgets, report monthly status updates, and identify opportunities for cost efficiency. Support tender preparation and bid submissions as required.

Client & Stakeholder Liaison



Act as a company representative in meetings with clients, consultants, and contractors. Maintain positive relationships with clients and supply chain partners, monitoring performance and implementing corrective measures when required. Communicate effectively with senior management and other project participants.

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ)



Promote and enforce site Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards. Prepare Health & Safety Plans, Risk Assessments, and Method Statements for all site works. Ensure subcontractor and material compliance with company policies and project requirements.

Leadership & Development



Supervise and motivate team members to achieve project objectives. Identify personal and team training or development needs and report to the Director. Foster a positive and collaborative working environment across all project teams.

Skills & Competencies



Strong organisational and planning abilities. Effective communicator at all levels, both written and verbal. Commercially aware with logical, problem-solving capability. Able to manage confidential information sensitively. Flexible, proactive, and capable of working independently or as part of a team. Excellent time management and ability to prioritise workload. Confident in leading project delivery and managing client relationships.

Knowledge & Experience



Proven experience in project engineering within a mechanical/electrical building services environment. Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously. Strong customer and interpersonal skills with the ability to build lasting relationships. Competent understanding of budgeting, scheduling, and quality control principles. Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Qualifications



Relevant industry qualifications in Mechanical engineering or building services. Full UK driving licence.
