Job Description

This specialist one to one support focuses on helping students who have autism spectrum conditions and or attention deficit disorder (ADD) Those working in this role will focus on helping students to develop study skills and strategies to work effectively in a higher education setting. You should possess an in-depth knowledge and understanding of autistic thinking and learning, together with an awareness of the strengths which students with these conditions can bring to a learning situation and the skills to help students use these skills to overcome any barriers to their learning.

It is essential that you have previous experience of working with students who have these conditions. Other duties which may be needed include assisting and building time management skills and helping the student stay on track with their studies. You should possess strong time management and organisational skills, and the ability to be able to identify other skills which may be needed by the student, such as comprehension skills, learning strategies as well as building on interpersonal skills. As this job involves working closely with students, you should be able to maintain a professional relationship and observe confidentiality is always maintained. It is also important that you are willing to adopt a flexible approach which will be tailored to the individual needs of the student.

As this is a specialist role, you should possess the relevant qualifications in order to work in this environment. These qualifications include, but are not limited to an undergraduate degree with a substantial autism component, a teaching qualification or a postgraduate certificate in a subject relevant to Autism Spectrum Conditions.

As the qualification criteria for this role varies depending on which type of certificate/degree you have, these will be assessed on a case by case basis.
