Job overview We are moving to a brand new laboratory in early 2024 and are looking to expand our workforce significantly before that move. Cambridge University Hospitals Histopathology department is one of the largest in the country with over 130 non-medical staff supporting over 50 Consultant Histopathologists. There is site specific reporting and we support many regional and national programmes. We are looking for people who have a desire for pushing the boundaries of current practice and want to join in a transformational programme of work which will involve adoption of new and innovative technologies and work practices. We have already adopted digital pathology and are looking to capitalise on the opportunities it offers. The department prides itself on staff development and offers many training and education opportunities for staff of all grades. Additional information: (*Trainee Specialist BMS) Candidates who do not hold a Specialist diploma in cellular pathology or equivalent, will be paid at Band 5 until successful completion of the Specialist Diploma in Cellular pathology or achieve competence to be on-call, at which point they will then be paid at a Band 6 rate. Achievement in meeting competence for on-call service still requires candidate to complete the Specialist Diploma in Cellular pathology.
Main duties of the job

  • Performs a wide range of routine healthcare science activities, whilst supporting junior members of staff including specimen receipt, specimen preparation including assisting pathologists at cut-up, embedding and microtomy of surgical tissue, slide collation, specimen storage and maintenance of equipment Demonstrate duties to new or less experienced employees. To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service. The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions. Participation in specialist areas of the laboratory. Acts as mentor for more junior scientific and support staff.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist IBMS Certificate of Competence
    IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or equivalent; or working towards achievement of IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology within 2 years plus specialist knowledge acquired through practical training experience.

  • Practical experience of working as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Histopathology Experience in cryotomy, embedding, microtomy and specimen category A transfer
    Experience of working unsupervised under one\xe2\x80\x99s own initiative in provision of an out of hours Histopathology service.

Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Special Stains, Mohs, Team leading, line management, lone working, specimen category B and C dissection and oncall Experience of working in the NHS
    Experience of training staff histopathological techniques

Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • Broad knowledge of Histopathology procedures and techniques Knowledge of Quality Management Systems Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
    Understands the role of diagnostic Histopathology in a clinical setting
