Job Description

This post is situated within a specialist paediatric rehabilitation engineering service. The client group currently served have severe and complex physical disabilities and therefore require bespoke assistive technology (AT) solutions in order to undertake activities of daily living. The equipment has a clinical role in the care of the child helping to prevent deformity in particular that associated with seating standing and lying.



RES provides clinical support to the pupils of Chailey Heritage School and a large number of outpatients referred from local services who cannot meet these clients' needs.



The post holder is required to attend a range of specialist clinics on and off site as a part of a multidisciplinary team to assess the client and establish the AT requirements. They will be required to design, develop and manufacture or modify and adapt existing equipment to an agreed solution and to discuss with those concerned the technical aspects of the use of the equipment produced. They are expected to work within our Quality Management System and make/modify equipment we are registered to manufacture. They are also expected to provide a technical advisory role to the junior members of staff within the service and outside agencies as appropriate.



This role is for a B6 Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) registered Rehabilitation Engineer, however, depending on applications received we will consider recruiting a B5 Rehabilitation Engineer who is willing to undertake training to become registered and progress into a B6 position. If applying for the B5-6 transition post supported supervision will be provided throughout the training period, likely 1-2years. There are multiple routes to registration and the route and timeline will be agreed upon prior to starting the position. Time will be provided for on the job training and supervision provided throughout the training period to support your development and everyday work. You will be required to complete all training activities within the allotted training time frame and progression to B6 will depend on successful RCT registration.

This role will involve being active within the clinics we run at Chailey. You will attend clinics along with Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, medics and other engineers. You will jointly assess the complex clients we see and help to design, develop, manufacture new equipment or adapt existing equipment. You will be an active member of the clinical team and contribute your technical knowledge in relation to the problems aiming to be solved. You will be responsible for managing any ongoing actions, writing up technical plans and drawings, gathering prescriptions and quotes from companies and applying for funding. You will need to keep track of all your ongoing work and ensure it's completed in good time.



Outside of clinics you will be an active and engaged part of the RES team where you will be involved in ongoing groups and projects with other team members.

1. To attend solo or as part of an RES team appointments and clinics with users, carers, and staff of other disciplines/outside agencies to discuss problems experienced by clients and their carers for which assistive technology may provide a solution.



2. To design and develop and manufacture equipment or adapt/modify commercially available equipment to solve individual problems of daily living experienced by clients and their families and carers.



3. To work within our Quality Management System and understand what we are registered to do.



4. To take account of the medical, therapeutic, nursing and the client's personal requirements relevant to the assistive devices to be supplied.



5. To use sound engineering techniques and other appropriate practices to develop and produce the assistive devices required and to seek advice when in doubt.



6. The post holder will need to communicate effectively with management and all RES staff, therapists, clients, local services and contractors and communicate in a professional manner.



7. To effectively organise and complete own workload and be efficient in the use of time and materials.



8. Contribute to project files and product development, attend staff meetings and participate in delegated action plans for the department as agreed by management.



9. Work as an engaged and enthusiastic member of the RES team including supporting ongoing projects and assisting other members of staff.



If on a B5-6 transition post part of your main duties will involve completing your training and working towards registration. You will be supported but expected to manage your own training to a degree and obtain registration within the agreed timeframe.



The degree of supported supervision and autonomy will vary depending on the banding being appointed to and previous experience.
