Specialist Support Worker (Learning Disabilities & Autism)
About the Role
Join a supportive and passionate team providing high-quality, outcome-focused care to individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism, including those with complex needs. Support service users to improve their quality of life, enhance physical and mental wellbeing, and develop greater independence and control in their daily choices.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver person-centred care and support, including personal care, medication management, maximising wellbeing, and personal safety.
Support participation in the local community, promote positive inclusion, and assist with household skills and money management.
Work in partnership with service users to identify goals and develop support plans that focus on achieving their aspirations.
Communicate effectively and treat all service users with dignity and respect, adapting to individual needs.
Maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment, adhering to health and safety, fire safety, and lone working procedures.
Follow all safeguarding procedures to promote the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults.
Collaborate with professional agencies and other services to ensure the delivery of a high-quality service.
Mentor and support colleagues regarding Positive Behaviour Support (PBS).
Act as shift leader when required and participate in care plan reviews.
Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements, standards, and organisational policies.
Support other duties as allocated by your manager.
Essential Requirements
NVQ 2/3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards this qualification).
Experience or awareness of the needs of people with learning disabilities/autism and the complexities of care.
Understanding of safeguarding, health and safety (including lone working, fire safety), and promoting dignity and inclusion.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
Sufficient literacy, numeracy, and IT skills to complete reports, record incidents, and update care/support plans.
Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, waking nights, and sleep-ins if required.
Fitness to undertake moving/handling and day-to-day support tasks as part of the post.
An enhanced DBS check will be required prior to appointment.
Desirable Skills
Knowledge of the benefits/entitlements system or willingness to learn.
Experience managing crisis interventions and supporting PBS.
Ability to mentor and act as a positive role model for colleagues.
