These posts have been created due to the expansion of our specialty
doctor tier to provide senior resident cover for the intensive care unit. It
is anticipated that the successful candidates will work initially out of hors
on the intensive care rota and in hours in intensive care, theatres and
labour ward. There will be opportunities in the future to move to working
on the obstetric or theatres out of hours rotas.
The successful applicants will join a department of 24 consultants, 12
specialty doctors/associate specialists and up to 12 rotating residents
from the Yorkshire Deanery.
There will be an opportunity to modify the draft job plan to
accommodate specific commitments and skills. Flexible working
arrangements may be accommodated and should be discussed with Dr
Gregory or Dr Dunlop on application.
Job plans of greater than 10PAs are available.
We are also interested in applicants with significant intensive care
experience who do not have a background in anaesthesia to staff our
senior resident tier on intensive care.
The department supports the concepts of continuing professional
development, clinical audit and external quality assurance and encourages
all doctors to participate in these activities by providing time and resources.
Specialty doctors are expected to continue to develop their skills and CPD
and to receive and deliver teaching. The Trust has an educational
programme aimed specifically at specialty doctors which receives funding in
addition to each doctor's study leave budget. Previous holders of these
posts have been supported to gain access to specialist training and to enter
the specialist register via the portfolio pathway (CESAR).
We strongly encourage leadership development. There is a trust leadership
programme and study leave is encouraged for this for appropriate
candidates. A mentoring programme is also in place in the Trust. Time is
allocated within job plans for leadership roles and professional leave
available for agreed additional responsibilities.
All staff are required to attend mandatory training. There are several "inhouse" CPD activities, including the departmental education/audit meetings,
a Trust lunchtime lecture programme training courses organised by the
Education Centre.
We encourage specialty doctors to develop specialist interests and
opportunities are available to have fixed sessions within job planning to
accommodate this..

The department was commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, perioperative fasting and anticoagulant management, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development.
We have Consultants and SAS doctors with specialist interests in sustainability and leadership, mentoring, critical care and regional anaesthesia. We have SAS doctors in many leadership roles in the department and other trust roles.
As a Department and as a Trust we have fully embraced the specialty doctor's charter. Autonomous working for specialty doctors is in place, and within anaesthesia we have specialty doctors working autonomously.
