Job Description

EPUT is looking to appoint a part time enthusiastic and passionate Specialty Doctor who will provide consistent, high quality Medical input support to the Community Perinatal services for Essex, based in Colchester. The team provides multidisciplinary, community specialist care for the assessment and treatment of woman with mental health illnesses in pregnancy and postnatally across the County of Essex.



The post- holder will serve the needs of patients across the North of Essex, which includes the areas linked to the three main hospitals, which are Princess Alexandria in Harlow, Colchester General and Broomfield Hospital. This will be reviewed periodically to ensure appropriate resource allocation to the different areas and any changes made shall be after deliberation.



You should be eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold Section 12 (2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983. You will also need to provide evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in psychiatry at time of application and likelihood of achieving CT2 competences in psychiatry by the start date of the post.

1. Provide high quality medical care with support from consultant perinatal psychiatrists across the Perinatal Service.



2. Maintain the high level of expertise and skill necessary for the provision of excellent quality perinatal mental health care, aiming for optimal outcomes for mother, infant and the wider family.



3. Provide medical input to the Perinatal Service's patients in a community setting in line with the agreed job plan. This includes assessments of women's mental health and mother infant relationships and related risks, bio-psycho-social diagnostic formulations, exploration of prevention, treatment and care options, clear communication and shared decision making with patients (and families as appropriate), communication and joint planning with other professionals and agencies by the most effective means, use of appropriate legal statutes and powers for example the MHA, MCA AND Children Act where necessary for good patient care.



4. Ensure that care provided is in line with vision and values of the service for patient centred, compassionate, high quality care focussed on the needs of the woman, the baby and the wider family, facilitating shared decision making at all times.



5. Ensure highest standards of transparency and clarity in communication with women and other professionals (e.g. all correspondence addressed to the patient and copied to all professionals).



6. Support the Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrists in providing clinical supervision to junior doctors that are working or training in the service, and offering clinical advice and information as and when required to all staff.



7. Work closely with all professionals in the Service and with other agencies, including voluntary organisations to ensure that high quality patient care and after-care is effectively co-ordinated.



8. Actively contribute to quality improvement activities in the Service. This includes participating in, and supporting or supervising others in initiating and completing projects, including audits, quality improvement initiatives, service evaluation and research. This should include both local and regional or national projects.



9. Participate in continuous evaluations/audits of the Service, including national audits and benchmarking. These include RCPsych CCQI Perinatal Network Peer reviews and related surveys, CCQI visits, and reports to commissioners. Actively engage in quality improvement responses to any recommendations from these or as may emerge from time to time from other sources (eg Confidential Enquiries; NICE Guidelines)



10. Participate in service evaluation and the planning of future service developments.



11. Ensure that cover is arranged for responsibilities during leave with consultant colleagues within the service.
