Job Description

This 10 PA post for a Specialty Doctor in psychiatry in the Regional Department of Psychotherapy, based in the Specialist Psychological Therapies in Newcastle upon Tyne, the post holder will join a well-established, dynamic and supportive team, providing face-to-face assessments and psychodynamic psychotherapy treatments. They will also provide teaching and supervision and contribute to strategic leadership.



The Centre for Specialist Psychological Therapies is actively involved in postgraduate training, supporting higher trainees in psychotherapy (one psychoanalytic, one psychodynamic or group, and one CBT) as well as a full-time core trainee.



The post-holder will have the opportunity and be supported to develop their training skills and be a trainer and supervisor for core and higher trainees. Working alo ngside the multidisciplinary team, including resident doctors, they will be the clinical expert from a medical psychotherapy perspective, ensuring best practice care is delivered whilst supporting the wider team. The post holder will also join the supportive leadership within the centre.

There will be a stimulating combination of clinical, supervisory, reflective practice and leadership opportunities. The clinical work involves face to face psychotherapy assessments and individual or group psychodynamic treatments. They will offer psychotherapy supervision to doctors, including core trainees, and other professions in addition to offering reflective practice and other indirect psychoanalytic work to support and develop teams across the care pathway. This includes Balint groups and complex case discussions. Regular supervision for psychotherapy assessments and treatments will be supported.



The post-holder will be involved in the whole of the patient pathway and will work with consultant psychiatrist colleagues and the trainees within the department. The post-holder will be expected to develop and be a trainer and supervisor for core trainees as well as being an active and supportive member of the multidisciplinary team, and a valued member within the leadership team.



You will have your own/shared office space and will be supported by a member of the admin team.

The Regional Department of Psychotherapy is the only specialist psychoanalytic service in the Trust, based in Newcastle upon Tyne with a smaller base in Sunderland. It sits within the Centre for Specialist Psychological Therapies, alongside distinct services in CBT, Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Family Therapy and Personality Disorder. The working relationships with colleagues in these services are close and valued.



The Psychodynamic psychotherapy service sits alongside Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Family Therapy and Personality Disorders. The working relationships with colleagues in these services are excellent.



There are five other psychodynamic, psychoanalytic or group analytic psychotherapists within the Regional Department and two Interpersonal psychotherapists. There is also a leadership team within the Department of Psychotherapy and the post-holder would join this team.



Referrals from tertiary, secondary and primary care are accepted for patients who experience a wide range of psychological disorders. The department offers individual once weekly psychoanalytic and group analytic time-limited psychotherapy with interventions provided on an outpatient basis.
