Job Description

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, innovative, and forward-thinking ophthalmologist to join our Glaucoma team at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC). This is a substantive post aimed at supporting and further developing our expanding Glaucoma services.



The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in Glaucoma and be committed to advancing both medical and surgical aspects of care in this subspecialty. Applicants should also possess advanced cataract surgery skills and have experience in performing glaucoma surgery.



We welcome applications from individuals looking to broaden their expertise in Glaucoma. In addition, BMEC offers an Ophthalmic Local Training (OLT) programme, which we actively encourage our doctors to pursue where appropriate.

The successful applicant will join a team of six substantive Glaucoma consultants and will be expected to play an active role in the management of both medical and surgical Glaucoma. You will be involved in the care of a diverse patient population and contribute to the education of medical students, junior doctors, and optometrists.



The Glaucoma department at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) operates across multiple hospital sites, delivering outpatient services at both Sandwell and BMEC. Inpatient and day case procedures are currently performed at BMEC, located on the City Health Campus site.



While this post does not include an on-call commitment, the post holder may be required to participate in evening sessions within the BMEC Emergency Department as needed.



Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to provide specialist Glaucoma advice to other ophthalmic subspecialties during routine working hours.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a high level of competence in managing both general and specialist Glaucoma cases, including laser procedures. Proficiency in cataract surgery and experience in glaucoma surgery are essential. The post holder will also contribute to the regional Eye Casualty Department, providing emergency ophthalmic care.



Initially, the role will be based primarily at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC). However, as the Trust prepares for the implementation of the Right Care, Right Here programme, there may be a requirement to work across other Trust sites.



BMEC is equipped with state-of-the-art multimodal diagnostic imaging, including FFA/ICG, wide-field imaging, and OCT-angiography, as well as a full suite of ophthalmic lasers. The department also runs an Ophthalmic Local Training (OLT) programme, offering four posts for candidates wishing to complete their training aspirations.



There are opportunities to participate in ongoing research projects and clinical trials. The post holder will play a key role in developing innovative approaches to Glaucoma care, including the expansion and streamlining of virtual services, which is a departmental priority.



Applicants must be trained in advanced Glaucoma and cataract surgery and be capable of independently performing laser procedures. The role also includes teaching and training responsibilities for allied health professionals, trainees, and fellows.



A detailed job plan and work schedule will outline the structure of the role, including location, responsibilities, and working hours. The successful candidate will participate in specialist Glaucoma clinics, with the option to include other subspecialties based on individual interests during the job planning process. The post holder will also contribute to the busy Eye Emergency Department, providing services in A&E, urgent care, and emergency clinics.



Extensive training and experience in ophthalmology are essential. The Trust is committed to supporting the continued development of special interests aligned with the appointee's career goals. The post holder will report to the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology.
