Job Description


We are facing a twin biodiversity crisis. Losing both wild biodiversity and agrobiodiversity \xe2\x80\x93 the diversity of the crops we eat and use. Kew is leading an exciting new project under the Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate that seeks to address this challenge, whilst also mitigating climate change and supporting sustainable development. This project will focus on Kew\xe2\x80\x99s extensive track record and datasets from Ethiopia, involving a range of local stakeholders.

Building on Kew\xe2\x80\x99s extensive work identifying and documenting Tropical Important Plant Areas ( ), you will help generate a coherent network of sites for plant diversity through targeted extinction risk assessment of endemic species in Ethiopia.

The ideal candidate for this post will have experience in applying the categories and criteria of the IUCN Red List to assess the extinction risk of species. They will be educated to degree level and will have experience of working with specimen collections. The ideal candidate will have a good working knowledge of taxonomy, nomenclature and geography (ideally in Africa), and the ability to apply such knowledge to make sound judgements on species extinction risk.

The candidate will be joining a close-knit team of conservation scientists at Kew, collaborating regularly with other scientists at Kew and internationally. The candidate will be a team player but also comfortable with working independently to make evidence-based decisions.

This role is based at Kew with the option of regular home working, subject to operational requirements.

The salary will be \xc2\xa328,249 per annum pro-rata.

It is anticipated that interviews for this role will be held in the week commencing Monday 17th July 2023.
