This is a mid-level, internally facing Specification Technologist role within a business-to-business liquid egg processing operation. The position provides maternity leave cover for the current job holder and is responsible for the effective day-to-day management of product and raw material specifications, internal technical systems, and supplier technical compliance. The role operates with a high degree of autonomy and plays a key role in internal system auditing, GMP audits, and supplier visits and audits, ensuring ongoing compliance with regulatory, certification, and customer technical requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Specifications & Technical Data Management
Independently manage the creation, maintenance, and approval of specifications for liquid egg products, raw shell eggs, ingredients, and packaging.
Maintain accurate specification data within internal systems, including allergen declarations, microbiological criteria, nutritional values, and shelf-life information.
Control specification change management processes, ensuring timely updates following formulation, process, supplier, or legislative changes.
Support internal commercial and customer-facing teams with accurate technical data for B2B customer submissions and enquiries.
Food Safety, Legislation & Standards
Ensure specifications and technical documentation remain compliant with relevant UK and EU food legislation, including egg products regulations.
Actively support critical food safety controls, pasteurisation validation, traceability, and cold chain integrity.
Maintain site compliance with food safety and quality standards such as BRCGS, customer requirements, or equivalent, from a systems and documentation perspective.
Auditing & Quality Systems Ownership
Plan, conduct, and report internal system audits in line with the site audit schedule.
Carry out GMP audits across all operational areas including intake, breaking, pasteurisation, packing, storage, and dispatch.
Raise non-conformances, agree corrective actions with site stakeholders, and verify completion and effectiveness.
Act as a key technical contact during external audits, inspections, and customer technical visits.
Supplier Technical Management & Audits
Conduct supplier visits and audits, particularly relating to egg suppliers and farms.
Assess supplier compliance with food safety, quality, biosecurity, and animal welfare requirements.
Review and maintain supplier technical documentation, including certifications, risk assessments, and specifications.
Support supplier approval, re-approval, and ongoing performance monitoring processes.
Internal Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
Work cross-functionally with production, procurement, engineering, and technical teams to resolve specification, audit, and compliance issues.
Provide technical input into process changes, continuous improvement activities, and internal projects during the maternity cover period.
Ensure effective handover and continuity of technical systems and documentation.
Skills & Experience
Essential
Degree (or equivalent) in Food Science, Food Technology, or a related discipline.
Proven experience in a technical, QA, or specifications role within food manufacturing.
Solid working knowledge of food legislation, food safety management systems, and B2B customer requirements.
Demonstrable experience conducting internal audits and GMP audits.
Strong technical writing, documentation, and data management skills.
Ability to work independently and manage priorities with minimal supervision.
Internal auditor qualification or formal audit training and HACCP level 2/3.
Desirable
Experience within liquid egg, egg products, or high-risk chilled food manufacturing.
Experience conducting supplier audits or supplier visits.
Familiarity with BRCGS Issue 9 or equivalent certification standards.
Experience and or knowledge of retail online systems.
