Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (Band 6 or 7)
Hurst Lodge School, Yateley, Hampshire
Term Time 8:30-4:30pm. If full time, commute to our clinic in Walton on Thames during the holidays will be needed. Part time positions will also be considered.
REPORTS TO Karen Garner; Director and Specialist Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapy Team Lead at Hurst Lodge
AIM
To provide specialist speech and language therapy services to children aged 3-18 years attending Hurst Lodge School. Children may present with a variety of diagnoses, including,
Sensory Processing Disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Speech and
Language delay/disorders.
The therapist will be involved in the assessment, report writing, and formulation of appropriate intervention plans for children referred by the school and will working holistically with families and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure child-centred care.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To conduct 1:1 treatment sessions in school.
2. To develop appropriate groups for children to attend to support their social communication needs.
3. To be responsible as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a specialist clinical workload.
4. To undertake assessments of children, using both standardised and informal assessment tools.
5. To demonstrate clinical reasoning and ability to interpret assessment data and formulate detailed clinical assessment reports.
6. To devise child/family centred treatment plans and therapy goals, considering a wide range of treatment techniques, grading activities to ensure that the individual's full potential is developed or maintained.
7. To provide a high standard of clinical record keeping.
8. To provide an effective high-quality service to all children and families.
9. To partake in service development and monitoring standards of practice.
10. To communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary team to promote the safety of children and the management of risk.

Essential/Desirable criteria
GENERAL EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS
Recognised Diploma/Degree
Registered with Health Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice
Evidence of successful completion of a range of other short courses at post graduate level
Evidence of attendance at other specialist course relevant to paediatrics
EXPERIENCE
Clinical experience of wide range of paediatric work in clinical or educational settings
Co-ordination of intervention planning in paediatrics
Clinical experience of working with children with a wide range of needs including Autistic Spectrum disorders, Dyspraxia, Sensory Processing Disorder and neurological disorders.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills e.g. breaking bad news or explaining upsetting conditions to patients / families
Demonstrates excellent analytical and reflection skills at clinical levels
Well-developed concentration skills and ability to multi-task, and work with frequent interruptions of complex nature
Excellent presentation skills, both verbal and written, of complex information to other professionals
Demonstrates high level of computer literacy to enable effective data collection, report and document writing
Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills
Demonstrates ability to be a good team member
Able to synthesise and present complex information at a service level
Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance /audit
Understanding of the roles of other professionals
Ability to work with the diverse needs of clients with complex communication difficulties
Well established knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools relevant to the specialist client group
Knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits and outcomes

Working in unpleasant working conditions e.g. incontinent children, children drooling, head lice, completing oral assessments

Copies of Qualifications and subsequent course certificates, HPC and
CRB certificates are required
