Job Description

'Diversity and Ability' are looking for SpLD Study Skills Tutors to work with university students based in West London and South West London (to support students at London South Bank University, Goldsmiths University and Kingston areas).We are an end-user led social enterprise that champions neurodiversity and embraces a celebratory model of disability. We provide SpLD Study Skills Support, Mentoring and Assistive Technology Training to learners in Higher Education and the workplace, and believe a holistic model of support using integrated Assistive Technology strategies is key.As an SpLD Study Skills Tutor, you would be involved in tutoring students on a one to one basis to help them with university life and work.The role involves:

  • Working with students with a range of learning differences (eg. dyslexia, ADD etc)
  • Creating effective learning strategies that take into account the student's individual learning style, course requirements and specific needs
  • Assisting with all study-related strategy building- encompassing reading, writing, note-taking, planning, organisation, revision etc.
  • Ensuring the student is accessing and understanding the course material to a good standard
  • Assisting with reinforcement of course material should the student need reiteration and bolstering of ideas
  • Supporting the student to develop practical, holistic, and integrated strategies (SpLD study skills and AT) with regards to workload and academic expectations
  • Signposting the student towards other practitioners involved in the student's support network where relevant
Person Specification
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence and sensitivity as you will be working with a range of students with different levels of needs and abilities
  • Experience of working with disabled/ neurodivergent adults
  • Understanding of Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) processes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner- ability to build clear professional boundaries, maintain the confidentiality of clients
  • High level of organisational skills
  • Ability to pick up IT skills and internal processes quickly
  • Experience using Google Services (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar) is an advantage
Essential
  • Membership to a professional body: PATOSS or BDA or ADSHE or Dyslexia Guild
  • Commit to working with students for the whole academic year
