Job Description

Working with a vision of "delivering excellence in all everything we do", the post holder will be based at the Specialist Receiving Unit at the City Hospital.



The post holder will be expected to be able to work flexibly covering a 24hr shift rotation.

The post holder will be required to:

Manage all aspects of patient flow and capacity across the Specialist Receiving Unit.

Work as flow and capacity based within the discharge lounge at city mainly ensuring that there is constant flow into and out of the area, ensuring that all patients are discharged safely in a timely manner.

Ensure that the safety of the patients is paramount by assisting in the seamless movement of patients throughout the Trust and onwards.

Be effective in managing challenging flow and capacity issues which may need further escalation to Specialty Management Team or the Directorate Leadership Team

To drive through the delivery of NUH flow and capacity targets to continually improve performance within the service.

To provide operational expertise and support to all members of the service

To work closely with the ward managers /leads of the wards/areas within Directorate around flow and capacity.

On a daily basis develop and review plans to achieve patient access targets at service level.

To identify the impact of changes to services or increases in services on resources and negotiate changes in resource where appropriate.

To manage and monitor changes to the administrative systems of the service (e.g. , NerveCentre, Careflow )

To contribute to service improvement at local and Trust level.

To provide and receive complex and highly sensitive information where objections need to be overcome to deliver the best outcome for patients

To work alongside site ops teams and divisional on call teams and respond proactively to ever changing demands in line with current system status

To drive timely flow from base wards and other areas to TOCU to support flow and capacity within ED.



We are home to the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, the Nottingham Children's Hospital and in partnership with the University of Nottingham we host a Biomedical Research Centre carrying out vital research into hearing, digestive diseases, respiratory, musculoskeletal disease, mental health and imaging.

As a teaching hospital, we are instrumental in the education and training of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. We are proud of our strong relationships with universities across the East Midlands, including the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough University.

The last year has been challenging for our teams. Alongside our continued recovery from Covid, our maternity services are subject to an independent review and we must do more to improve our culture. We are more focused than ever on making sustained improvements across our services. As one of the NHS Trusts identified in the New Hospital Programme, a programme of investment in NHS hospitals, we have extensive plans to improve our hospitals and the services we deliver for patients. As well as the redevelopment of the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital, plans for a new 70 bed NHS rehabilitation facility set to be built on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, are currently going through the approvals process.

The hours of this post will cover 2pm till 10pm 7 days a week.



Responsible for the provision analysis of Flow and Capacity information to the operational meetings and to provide and receive complex information.

To undertake detailed operational monitoring, and instigate appropriate action, to ensure that the service achieves the local targets,

To ensure that systems and processes are in place to prevent access breaches and same sex breaches.

To understand the fluctuation of activity for emergency care and delayed discharges and assist in the development of plans to make improvements.
