Staff Nurse, Band 5 (34.5 hours a week)
As a Band 5 Staff Nurse you would be responsible for caring for your own caseload of patients. This would involve assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care needs and assessments. You would be caring for surgical patients following head and neck surgery but can also be caring for other surgical specialty patients on the ward. You would also be working with health care support workers and student nurses and need to delegate tasks effectively and safely.
You would work closely and liaise with the multidisciplinary team regularly to ensure patient care needs are met. You would practice in line with Trust policies and procedures and comply with data protection and confidentiality legislation. You would need to actively participate in both mandatory training and education development opportunities relevant to your role.
Directly deliver, coordinate and supervise patient care, ensuring that the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care is of high standard, encompassing the Trust vision of 'best
care for everyone.
Deliver, demonstrate and supervise safe and appropriate care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using highly specialised equipment and resources.
Administer medications, within the Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing, and Administration of Medications (POPAM) guidelines
Disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately and sensitively, ensure patient confidentiality is maintained
Role model high standards of patient care, communication, commitment and organisation for others to follow.
Utilise hospital computer systems, including the intranet, Trak-care and electronic patient records
Access and update patient information, while maintaining clear and accurate written records relevant to nursing practice
Work collaboratively and cohesively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients and their families and provide high standards of care
Take a key role in the implementation of any clinical initiative or introduction of new equipment.
Work continuously to promote and support clinical training, education and development of other staff.
Participate in mentorship and educational programmes for students and other members of the team
Actively support all agreed quality improvements

Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
Recognised for possessing relevant expert clinical knowledge and skills of Head and Neck speciality and for demonstrating high standards of patient care
Ability to act as a role model and resource for staff, demonstrating competence in clinical skills, knowledge and leadership
Enhanced levels of dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skills
An understanding of research and evidence-based practice, with a willingness to partake in clinical audit / research as appropriate and relevant
Evidence of continued personal and professional development and commitment to education
Enhanced IT skills (Electronic Patient Records, Trakcare, Safecare, NHS Mail, Microsoft Office)
Effective communication, interpersonal, organisational and planning skills
