The Teenage Cancer Trust Unit (TCTU) is a dedicated TYA Unit within the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, where patients aged between 16-24 years can receive their cancer care and treatment in an age-appropriate clinical setting, staffed by both Adult and Paediatric Nurses. We are the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for the South Thames region, caring for patientswith a wide range of Haematology and Oncology Cancers, including delivering Stem Cell Transplants. TCTU has multiple features and resources such as a complementary therapy suite, chill out room and a roof garden, alongside an extensive holistically focused MDT that can help to improve and enhance patient experience.Working at the Royal Marsden will provide you with many opportunities, both academic and clinical. There is plenty of educational support available within the unit from experienced Practice Educators. The education team will support you in gaining a module relevant to cancer care at level 6 or above, if you do not already hold this.Main duties of the job

  • To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinaryteam to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
  • To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals orplans.
  • To participate fully in the day to day organization and running of clinical trials including therecruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaison as required withtrial sponsors.

  • To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to gain anunderstanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop apositive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that these needs are met. This will include:
  • Counterchecking patients vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapyprescription and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Educating patients on their treatment such as indications and side effects.
  • Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge /transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert theSister/Charge Nurse of any changes. To set goals for each of the identified nursing issues andencourage / teach other nursing staff to do the same. To help the patient achieve set goals throughcare planning.
  • As a specialist cancer nurse, to assess the educational and informational needs of the patient andfamily. This includes producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimumunderstanding of nursing care and the likely outcome.

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment
Desirable
  • Qualification in oncology or speciality Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent) Recognised teaching qualification
ExperienceEssential
  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
Desirable
  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
