Main duties of the job
As a Band 5 Staff Nurse in the Gynaecology Ward and Day Case Unit, you will deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to women undergoing elective and emergency gynaecological procedures. Your responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualised care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. You will provide pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout their stay. Duties involve monitoring vital signs, managing pain, administering medications, and supporting recovery following surgical interventions such as hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and minor procedures.
You will educate patients on treatment plans, discharge instructions, and health promotion, including sensitive topics like menopause and fertility. Maintaining accurate documentation and adhering to infection control and safeguarding policies are essential. You will assist in coordinating admissions and discharges, ensuring efficient patient flow within the ward and day case unit. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Band 5 Staff Nurse plays a key role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to women undergoing elective and emergency gynaecological procedures. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the post holder provides holistic nursing care across the inpatient ward and day case unit, ensuring patient dignity, comfort, and safety throughout their hospital journey. This role involves managing pre-operative and post-operative care, supporting enhanced recovery pathways, and addressing the physical and emotional needs of patients with gynaecological conditions. The nurse will uphold professional standards in line with the NMC Code, maintain accurate documentation, and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities include:
Undertake comprehensive patient assessments, develop individualised care plans, and evaluate outcomes.
Prepare patients for theatre, monitor recovery, manage pain, and provide discharge education.
Admit and discharge patients efficiently in the day case unit, ensuring adherence to protocols and safe transitions.
Administer medications safely, including controlled drugs, and maintain accurate records.
Offer clear information and emotional support regarding procedures, recovery, and self-care, including menopause and fertility-related guidance.
Maintain a clean, safe environment and comply with infection prevention and health and safety standards.
Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists, and allied health professionals to deliver coordinated care.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation in electronic and paper systems, safeguarding confidentiality.
Participate in mandatory training, clinical supervision, and reflective practice to maintain professional competence.
