Staff Nurse - Special Schools - Full Time - Term Time Only
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who has experience in community paediatric nursing, children's continence and working in a special school.
The School Nursing Team deliver health care to children with complex health needs attending Greenmead School in Wandsworth. They are responsible for undertaking health assessments, completing and updating care plans, managing emergency situations and providing training for education staff. They complete reports and attend child protection conferences.
The successful applicant will have the ability to work collaboratively with other health professionals and school staff to support and empower children, young people and their families to improve health and give every child and young person the opportunity to develop their full potential.
Main duties of the job
The Specialist Schools Nursing Team delivery health care to children and young people with complex health needs aged 3-19 attending school. They are responsible for undertaking health assessments, completing and updating care plans, managing emergency situations and providing training for school staff.
The post holder will ensure that high quality nursing care is delivered within Greenmead Primary Special School across two campuses.
The post holder will work collaboratively with other professionals involved in the care of children and young people including therapists, educational staff, school nursing and Social Services to support and empower children, young people and their families, improve health and give every child and young person the opportunity to develop their full potential.

General Duties

Ensure that all areas of practice adhere to all current NMC guidance
Ensure high standards of nursing care are delivered at all times by supporting regular monitoring and evaluating client outcomes
Safely administer prescribed medications, monitor their effects and report all medication errors
Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced
Take a proactive role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines, children, young people and families
Maintain accurate and contemporaneous manual and electronic records in all aspects of care provision to promote continuity and partnership, in line with SHC policies and NMC Record Keeping Guidelines
Ensure that all complaints are listened to and that issues identified are addressed appropriately
Use reflective practice as a method of ensuring that appropriate effective nursing care is delivered
Report incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately
Promote a professional image at all times and be accountable for own clinical practice
Ensure that nursing care is client focused and that client privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
Clinical Responsibilities
Work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the health needs of the children and young people are met
Carry out clinical care interventions daily for children and young people with healthcare needs in the special school/nursery setting
Participate in teaching nursing and support staff as delegated by the senior staff nurses/Clinical Service Lead
Promote the mental, physical and emotional health of children and young people with physical and learning disabilities liaising with parents/carers, teachers and the multidisciplinary team
Contribute to and undertake health assessments to identify the health needs of individual children, implementing and evaluating programmes of care, referring as necessary to other professionals
Work with parents and specialist teams to assist in the creation and delivery of care plans and risk assessments for pupils with complex health needs and long term conditions
Follow the SHC Services and PAN London Safeguarding Children's Board procedures to safeguard children. Provide reports and attend safeguarding meetings as required
Identify risks when delivering care within the service, reporting these to the senior staff nurses/Clinical Service Lead
Contribute to the delivery and evaluation of the health promotion programmes within the school
Support senior colleagues in planning and providing appropriate learning experiences for students. Act as a Supervisor and Mentor for student nurses on placement in the school
Utilise research findings and evidence based practice to inform clinical decision-making
Participate in any clinical audit programmes and the evaluation of own practice within the clinical area.
