The Merchant Experience team
This team is home to our merchant platform, including our client facing platform, and merchant account and configuration. Our mission is to provide our merchants with a delightful, secure yet compliant platform that allows them to make the best use of Checkout.com products. They also continuously work with other Checkout.com teams to expand our product suite and build interfaces for other product areas that bring their capabilities to life.
At Checkout.com, we embrace the owner-operator model of work in which our squads are responsible for development, testing and operations and are now looking for a principal engineer to come join us and help us build great products.
The role
As a Principal Engineer at Checkout.com, you\'ll be providing expert technical leadership in the design of our cloud-based payment platform, inspiring and establishing best practices as well through leading by example.
Your role involves anything from best-in-class software development patterns to designing proper architectures (particularly defining the standards for our distributed architecture) and influencing cross-domain projects at scale. Not only will you have responsibility and impact to your own team, but you\'ll also be responsible for the tech standards and the cross-team initiatives.
Finally, you\'ll act as a coach and mentor, providing technical leadership to the engineering teams as well as work along with the other Principal Engineers inside of Checkout in order to reach new levels of stability, uptime and throughput in the Payments market.
How you\'ll make an impact

  • Partner with senior technical leadership to contribute to the architectural design for our products.
  • Take ownership for and lead on technical and architectural decisions within the merchant experience pillar.
  • Mentor and upskill engineers, providing technical guidance and best practice.
  • Research new technologies and prototype potential solutions for performance, scalability, resilience and availability.
  • Look for opportunities to improve architectural design patterns, initiating change to remove complexity.
  • Collaborate with globally distributed and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Actively promoting innovative thinking, designing processes that encourage more ideation.
  • Create and maintain a development environment for efficient testing and integration.
  • Acting as a filter balancing risk and reward in measurable ways.
  • Driving continuous improvement in the team.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation.
Qualifications

What we\'re looking for
  • Expert level experience in designing and managing large, scalable, high throughput, highly available and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
  • Expert level experience in Cloud-based application development (we use AWS).
  • Solid experience in Software Development, Design, and Architecture.
  • Dealing with data on high volume in a high availability production system.
  • Enthusiastic about delivery and experience working in a fast-paced agile environment.
  • Desire to work on an exciting product suite within a fast scaling technical business.
  • Solid understanding of HTTP and RESTful design.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL.
  • Experience with Unit and Integration testing.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Deployment workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to interact effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Additional Information

Whilst this is advertised in Tallinn (Estonia), we are also open to hiring someone in London (UK).
