The Steelwork Draughtsman will play a crucial role in the design and detailing of steel structures for construction projects. This role involves preparing detailed technical drawings and plans for the fabrication and erection of steel components, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and client specifications.
In addition to the above you will be involved in coordination of the steelwork designs and be responsible for managing the coordination of all design activities related to steelwork on construction projects. This role ensures that steelwork designs are delivered on time and within budget. The coordinator will work closely with engineers, draughtsmen, project managers, and the construction team to ensure effective collaboration and seamless integration of the steel design into the overall project.
Key Responsibilities:
Steelwork Draughtsman
Drawing Preparation
:
Create detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for steel structures, including beams, columns, connections, and other components.
Develop structural detail drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and erection plans.
Produce accurate and detailed drawings based on project specifications, site surveys, and engineering calculations.
Collaboration
:
Work closely with structural engineers, architects, and project managers to understand the project requirements and resolve any technical issues.
Coordinate with the fabrication and erection teams to ensure clarity and accuracy of the steelwork drawings.
Attend project meetings as required to provide updates on the progress of steelwork drawings and resolve any issues.
Design Support
:
Assist in the design process, reviewing and modifying designs as needed to ensure compliance with safety standards, regulations, and client specifications.
Provide support for the preparation of project proposals, including estimating the quantity and cost of materials and labour.
Quality Control
:
Review and ensure that all drawings are accurate, up to date, and comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., British Standards, Eurocodes).
Conduct checks for compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Ensure the technical integrity of all steelwork designs and resolve any discrepancies between design and site conditions.
Documentation
:
Maintain and organise drawing files, ensuring that all records are easily accessible and up to date.
Provide clear and concise documentation to assist with the procurement and construction processes.
Issue drawings to clients, contractors, and suppliers, ensuring that any revisions are clearly communicated.
Technical Support
:
Provide technical assistance to the fabrication team during the manufacturing process.
Answer technical queries and resolve any issues that arise on-site during the steel erection phase.
Steelwork Design Coordinator
1. Design Coordination

Assist in overseeing the steelwork design process from initial concept to final approval, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of design packages.
Coordinate the design team's efforts, including draughtsmen, engineers, and other relevant stakeholders, ensuring that all designs are aligned with the project's objectives and requirements.
Ensure that all design solutions are practical, cost-effective, and compliant with project specifications and industry standards.

Project Management
:
Manage design schedules and track project progress, ensuring that deadlines are met and that all design milestones are achieved.
Liaise with the project manager and other team members to identify and resolve any potential design issues or delays.
Monitor design changes and revisions, ensuring that all modifications are properly documented and communicated to all relevant parties.

Collaboration with Other Teams
:
Work closely with the team to ensure that the steelwork design is structurally sound and complies with safety standards.
Communicate effectively with other departments, including procurement, fabrication, and construction teams, to ensure the smooth transition of designs from planning to execution.
Liaise with clients, contractors, and subcontractors to clarify design requirements and resolve technical queries.

Quality Assurance
:
Ensure that all designs meet the required quality standards, adhering to British Standards (BS), Eurocodes, and other relevant codes and regulations.
Perform regular checks to verify that designs are accurate, complete, and in line with project specifications.
Address any discrepancies or issues identified during design reviews, and propose effective solutions.

Technical Support
:
Provide technical support to the fabrication and construction teams during the manufacturing and erection phases.
Assist with the resolution of any technical issues on-site related to the steelwork design.
Provide clear and concise information for the procurement and sourcing of materials and steel components.
6.
Documentation and Reporting
:
Maintain a detailed record of all design documents, including drawings, calculations, and specifications.
Ensure that all revisions, amendments, and updates to design documents are recorded and distributed to relevant stakeholders.
Prepare regular reports on design progress and provide updates to senior management and clients as required.
7.
Health and Safety Compliance
:
Ensure that all steelwork designs comply with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Promote a culture of safety within the design team and across the project.
8. General
Various additional tasks i.e. detailing works as and when requested by Senior Management
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Experience
:
Previous experience (typically 2-5 years) as a steelwork draughtsman in the construction or engineering industry.
Familiarity with steel detailing, fabrication processes, and site-based practices.
Qualifications
:
A relevant qualification in engineering, construction, or a related discipline (e.g., HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent).
Technical Skills
:
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, or similar).
Knowledge of steel fabrication and erection techniques.
Understanding of structural engineering principles, material properties, and design codes.
Knowledge
:
In-depth understanding of British Standards (BS) and Eurocodes.
Familiarity with building regulations and construction safety protocols.
